Dave Hogan/Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesToday marks what would have been late Beatles guitarist George Harrison‘s 76th birthday, and Paul McCartney has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to his old friend and band mate.
“Happy birthday forever George, we love ya!” writes Sir Paul in a tweet, which is accompanied by a black-and-white photo of McCartney and Harrison onstage together during the Beatlemania era.
John Lennon‘s widow, Yoko Ono, also paid homage to Harrison in a message that referenced George’s Eastern spiritual beliefs, as well as her own.
“Happy Birthday George!” Yoko tweeted. “George, we miss you! I hope you are hearing all this – in an Indian sense or in an Asian sense you are still with us, and you must be laughing about us! love, yoko.” Attached to the note is a photo of Harrison and Ono together, circa 1970.
Harrison’s son, Dhani, also acknowledged his dad’s birthday, posting a Twitter message that reads, “Hand in hand we walk away,” along with a photo of him as a child holding George’s hand.
In addition, Harrison’s own Twitter feed posted a message quoting lyrics from George’s 1979 song “If You Believe”: “All your love’s reflected back to you.”
The note also asks fans to celebrate George’s birthday by sharing their “favorite stories, songs and photos” of the rock legend.
Meanwhile, GeorgeHarrison.com posted a 1969 pic of Harrison behind a drum kit, along with a story explaining that the image was taken on George’s 26th birthday, 50 years ago today, at London’s Abbey Road studios, where he’d gone to record some demos.
The tracks he worked on were “Old Brown Shoe,” “Something” and the tune that became the title track of his 1970 solo album, All Things Must Pass.
Harrison died on November 29, 2002, from complications of lung cancer. He was 58.
