Wednesday in Atlanta, Todd Rundgren launched a North American trek that’s being billed as the first hybrid concert/book tour in support of his new autobiography, The Individualist: Digressions, Dreams & Dissertations.

Explaining to ABC Radio the inspiration behind the hybrid trek, Rundgren says, “I don’t have a new record that I’m promoting…so we needed something to build a tour around, and the fact that I had the book coming out…seemed like a good way to kill two birds with one stone.”

The first part of the trek features two-show stands in 10 major cities, wrapping up with a May 12-13 engagement in San Francisco, while the second portion, which begins May 27 in Portland, Oregon, finds Todd playing individual gigs in each city he visits.

Todd points out that doing two-night stands gives him the opportunity to do book signings and media appearances in those cities. In addition, the 71-year-old says the shows are tied in with the memoir in that he’s only playing “material [that’s] contemporaneous with the book,” which covers his life until age 50.

Rundgren says the show’s broken into two parts, with the first offering “a terse little run-through of…a big chunk of my musical evolution.” The second part will start with a Q&A session in which Todd answers select questions audience members have submitted before the concert. After that, Rundgren says, “[W]e’ll play another set of music…that will be a different set every night, from a larger collection of tunes pared down to…maybe 10 or 12 [songs].” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)

Enhancing the concerts will be video footage featuring a variety of rare archival clips.
