The Pretenders releasing new album, 'Hate for Sale,' in May; check out lead single, "The Buzz"

BMGAmidst all this COVID-19 coronavirus craziness comes some good news: The Pretenders have announced plans to release new studio album titled Hate for Sale on May 1.

In conjunction with the announcement, the band also released the first single from the record today, a melodic mid-tempo pop-rock tune called, “The Buzz.” The track is available now as a digital download and via streaming services, and you also can check it out on YouTube.

“I think we all know that love affairs can take on the characteristics of drug addiction,” says Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde about the new song. “‘The Buzz’ is about that. Not mine, of course — I’m never obsessive never obsessive never obsessive.”

Hate for Sale features 10 new original songs co-written by Hynde and Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne, marking the first time the two have penned a full collection of tunes together. The album is a follow-up to 2016’s Dan Auerbach-produced Alone, and is the first record Chrissie has made with her current touring band — Walbourne, bassist Nick Wilkinson and founding drummer Martin Chambers.

Hate for Sale, which can be pre-ordered now, was produced by Stephen Street, whose previous credits include albums by The Smiths, Blur and The Cranberries. Special bundles featuring a Hate for Sale CD or vinyl LP packaged with a t-shirt are available at The Pretenders’ online store.

As previously reported, The Pretenders are scheduled to join Journey for a lengthy North American tour that currently is slated to get underway with a May 15 show in Ridgefield, Washington. Of course, the trek could be affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
