President Donald Trump has announced a new mission for Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County.

The president told troops gathered in Harrison Township Tuesday that the base is getting an an F-15 EX fighter mission with 21 aircraft.

Today I’ve come in person to lay to rest any doubts about Selfridge’s future and the vital role it’ll play in our national defense,” Trump said. “As Commander-in-Chief, I’m proud to announce that very soon we will replace the retiring A-10 Warthogs with 21 brand new F-15 EX Eagle II fighter jets, the best in the world.”

Leaders have said failure to replace the A-10 mission would result in job losses at the base, which has an $800 million annual economic impact on Macomb County.

In a statement, Governor Whitmer, who was at the speech, calls the announcement a huge, bipartisan win for Michigan.
