If you like asparagus, you’re in the right place.

Michigan is the number one producer of the vegetable, producing about 26 million pounds a year. John Stephens owns Stephens Farm in west Michigan’s Walkerville and says the crop looks good this year.

I would say give it to the climate, the soil, and the farmers that do just a fantastic job,” Stephens said. “I’m totally impressed.”

Stephens started growing asparagus in 1988 and has about 15 and a half acres in Oceana County, considered the Asparagus Capital of the World.

Asparagus generates about $30 million per year in Michigan, according to a Michigan State University study.
