Benton Harbor City Commissioners could be asked to consolidate polling locations in order to save money.
A resolution that would have trimmed all four polling places in the city down to just one, to be located at the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center, was originally set to appear on this week’s city commission agenda, but was removed before the meeting started. Nevertheless, some residents and commissioners had comments as they seek answers.
Commissioner Ethel Clark Griffin was opposed to eliminating three voting locations in favor of designating one central location. She said there’s no reason for it.
“Benton Harbor has been around since 1860,” Clark Griffin said. “We’ve been having four polling sites. I don’t see what’s the problem now. So I don’t see a reason to combine either or, but there are other [ locations ] in the Fourth Ward that can accommodate voters.”
Clark Griffin was specifically concerned about her Fourth Ward.
“The Fourth Ward is the biggest ward, especially in an area which probably has the most voters. So that would be a great disadvantage.”
Clark Griffin questioned whether slimming down to one polling place would really save money if the same number of election workers would be needed and if Dial a Ride was going to be needed to transport people further from their homes to vote.
The resolution making the change said the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center at 190 West Empire Avenue has offered the use of its facilities for elections and that the location would have adequate space, provide accessibility, and offer enough parking.
Commissioners never considered the resolution, although City Clerk Tiffany Moore said it will be sent to a committee soon.
