And we thought the I-94 construction zone in Berrien County was bad.

A Detroit area highway construction project is such a headache that first responders are asking drivers to avoid it altogether.

A group of fire chiefs in northern Oakland County have posted an alert asking drivers to avoid the construction zone on I-75. North Oakland County Fire Authority Chief Matt Weil says the road work is hampering efforts to get to emergencies as speeding drivers cause crashes.

People are traveling 70, 80, 90, and yes, 100 miles an hour through there,” Weil said. “So all it takes is one person to clip another or bump the wall or something, and then you’ve got four or five cars that have just piled up. And now you’ve got a wreck.”

Weil says lives have already been lost, including a Flint-area man who was hit after getting out of his car Wednesday night. He says the message isn’t about blaming anyone, it’s about safety.

The chiefs have been in contact with MDOT, but the main message is slow down and avoid the southbound lanes of the freeway if you can.
