No one was hurt, but a family was displaced following a Saturday afternoon car fire in Benton Harbor.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says officers were sent to 551 North Winans and found the vehicle fire had spread to a nearby house. It says a homeless person was living in the car and may have fallen asleep while smoking, causing the blaze.

The home suffered severe damage, and public safety says the family that lived there didn’t have insurance. Neither did the person in the vehicle. The American Red Cross is now assisting them.

Assisting at the scene were the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety, the Benton Township Fire Department, and Medic 1 Ambulance.
