Firefighters from several Van Buren and Allegan county departments battled a blaze that destroyed a Columbia Township residence on Sunday.

Firefighters were dispatched to a residence on Baseline Road near 51 1/2 street just before 5 pm.

When first responders arrived, they say the residence was fully engulfed and the fire had spread to two outbuildings and a field.

Sheriff deputies helped one resident who was in a wheelchair in getting away from the fire. That person received medical treatment on site.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Assisting the Columbia Township fire department with tankers and manpower were Bangor Community FD, South Haven Area Emergency Services, Lee Township FD, Bloomingdale FD, Gobles FD, Lawrence FD and Allegan (Trowbridge) FD.
