A state champion is crowned for the first time in a new Michigan high school sport, and they’re from St. Joseph.

History was made at Ford Field Sunday as St. Joseph High School defeated Brighton for the first ever Girls Flag Football State Championship. It came down to the last 1:30. Brighton scored and went for 2 hoping to take the lead, but St. Joseph had a goal line stand to secure the victory.

The team won three games in total on Sunday to take the crown, which took a toll on Coach Matt Cook’s voice. But how did he feel?

It feels great.,” Cook said. “It’s been a whirlwind for the last 12 hours or so, but most of all, I’m just so proud of our girls. So proud of how they played, how they were selfless, how they stayed together. Most of all, I’m so excited for the future of girls’ flag football in the state of Michigan.”

The goal now to make girls flag football an MHSA-sanctioned sport.
