The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department is warning everyone of the latest phone scam.

Sheriff Dan Abbott says residents have reported receiving text messages asking them to pay unpaid fines. The message contains a link to do so.

The message states, in part, “Michigan State Department of Vehicles Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 11.” It then tells the recipient they’ll face various penalties for not responding.

Abbott says this is a scam. He says be wary of any unsolicited text message asking for payment via phone or text. Do not click on the links included in such messages and do not provide any personal information to the senders.

Abbott says the text messages being received by Van Buren County residents as part of this latest scam come from various numbers.
