The city of Benton Harbor will hold a celebration this month to mark the opening of its new outdoor fitness court.
In 2021, the city purchased equipment for the fitness court using $50,000 grants from the National Fitness Campaign, Whirlpool, and Corewell Health. However, the court sat in storage for quite a while as the city identified a location for the equipment. Last year, city commissioners agreed to install the court at 110 Water Street, across from Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park.
On Monday, June 16, the city in partnership with the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber, Priority Health, and National Fitness Campaign will officially unveil the new court, along with a supporting mobile app.
The new Benton Harbor Fitness Court is an open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Created with adults of all ages in mind, the Fitness Court is adaptable for all fitness levels. New users can also download the Fitness Court App as a coach-in-your-pocket style platform.
Mayor Marcus Muhammad says the city is “pleased to encourage health and well-being for residents and visitors of the City of Benton Harbor.”
The celebration of the new court will start at 3 p.m. on Monday.
