New taxpayer-funded security upgrades are coming to the Michigan Capitol building.

Members of the Michigan State Capitol Commission unanimously approved the upgrades in a closed session, withholding details of the project and how much it will cost.

Bridge Michigan reporter Jordyn Hermani says the commission chair told reporters if the recommendation were publicly known, they would be rendered useless as security measures.

“The head of the state House, which is House Speaker Matt Hall, and the head of the state Senate, which is Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, a Republican and Democrat respectively,” Hermani said. “They know what these upgrades are, according to the commission, and when we reached out, we were met with complete silence.”

The Capitol has firearm detectors that weren’t used prior to 2021. Lawmakers are allowed to conceal carry firearms, but nobody else is.
