Michigan lawmakers will be debating funding for the K through 12 education budget in the coming weeks.

A plan cleared the House last week. Supporters say will increase per-student funding to $12,000 and give districts more local control.

However, an analysis by the Senate Appropriations Committee, chaired by Lansing Democrat Sarah Anthony, indicates the budget would slash funding for several programs, eliminate the school breakfast and lunch programs, and more.

We have heard from individuals who are in the classrooms, in the school buildings, folks like school boards, school administrators, principals,” Anthony said. “They have all collectively said that the House proposal is a non-starter.”

Anthony is calling the proposed education budget fiscally irresponsible and morally shortsighted.
