Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph is back open after police shut it down early again on Sunday due to fights.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says a large number of young adults and minors arrived at the beach around 8 p.m. and started causing a disturbance. That led to two individuals fighting.
Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the beach responded and sought assistance from the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and additional county patrol units.
One young adult and one juvenile were detained and given tickets for disturbing the peace. The juvenile was later released to a parent. However, the sheriff’s department says the group continued to act disorderly.
For the sake of public safety, police closed Silver Beach early for the evening. It reopened Monday.
The sheriff’s department says it takes a zero tolerance approach to lawbreaking at Silver Beach. It asks anyone with cell phone video of the fights to contact it so it can get help identifying some of the troublemakers.
