Jacob Lopez pitched seven innings and Nick Kurtz hit a three-run homer to help the Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night. Lopez (2-4) gave up three hits and a walk, striking out six to improve to 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in his last four starts. Jack Flaherty (5-9) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks in six innings. Flaherty struck out seven. Flaherty walked two batters in the third before Kurtz hit a changeup to the top of the first row of shrubs above the 412-foot sign. Michael Kelly pitched the eighth, and Mason Miller threw a perfect ninth for his 15th save.
White Sox 7, Diamondbacks 3 – Lenyn Sosa homers twice to lead White Sox past Diamondbacks 7-3
Lenyn Sosa went deep twice for his first career multi-homer game and finished with a career-high four RBIs to lead the Chicago White Sox past the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3. Andrew Benintendi added a solo shot Wednesday and rookie catcher Kyle Teel had three hits with an RBI and two runs scored to help last-place Chicago avoid a sweep. Mike Tauchman and Sosa finished with three hits as the White Sox won for just the third time in 14 games. White Sox rookie starter Sean Burke allowed two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out seven. Zac Gallen permitted five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Cubs 8, Cardinals 0 – Happ hits leadoff HR, Boyd tosses 6 innings to help the Cubs beat the Cardinals 8-0
Ian Happ hit a leadoff home run and drove in three, Matthew Boyd gave up three hits in six scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-0. Reese McGuire and Kyle Tucker also homered for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Boyd (7-3), who struck out three and did not issue a walk, has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last six starts. Ryan Brasier, Michael Fulmer and Porter Hodge combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief to close out the shutout. Erick Fedde (3-7) allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.

MLB – Fan banned by MLB for heckling Dbacks’ Marte to tears with barb about late mother
A 22-year-old fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday night has been banned indefinitely from all major league stadiums, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. Marte was seen in tears on the field after the spectator yelled a derogatory comment about Marte’s late mother during a seventh-inning at-bat in Arizona’s 4-1 win over Chicago. According to a White Sox spokesperson, the security staff at the ballpark relayed that the fan was “very apologetic and remorseful after the fact, and admitted to being very inappropriate and stupid with his comments."

WNBA – DeWanna Bonner says ‘the fit did not work’ after being waived Fever,
The Indiana Fever have waived DeWanna Bonner. The move Wednesday gives the 16-year veteran her unconditional release. Bonner had been away from the team since June 12 and missed five games for personal reasons. She averaged 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds a game for the Fever since coming to the franchise as a free agent in February. The 37-year-old Bonner averaged double-figures scoring in each of her seasons in the WNBA and has been a full-time starter since 2012. She only started in three of the nine Indiana games she played in. She moved into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list in the season opener.
NBA – Cooper Flagg the new Maine man for the Mavs as the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft
Cooper Flagg is headed to the Dallas Mavericks, who may have found their next franchise superstar less than five months after trading one away. The Mavericks took the Duke forward with the No. 1 pick in the draft Wednesday night, selecting the 18-year-old who was the college player of the year in his lone season. Mavericks fans were furious when Dallas traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, some immediately threatening to end their support of the team. But the ones who stuck around may quickly love Flagg, who averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds while leading Duke to the Final Four. Rutgers freshman Dylan Harper was taken by San Antonio with the No. 2 pick.

The players selected in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft. Duke freshman Cooper Flagg went first overall to the Dallas Mavericks. Flagg became the fourth freshman named Associated Press men’s national player of the year. San Antonio took Rutgers freshman point guard Dylan Harper at No. 2. Philadelphia grabbed Baylor freshman guard VJ Edgecombe at No. 3. Duke had three top-10 picks with Kon Knueppel going fourth and Khaman Maluach going 10th. Rutgers had a second pick with Ace Bailey at No. 5. Illnois also had a pair of teammates in Kasparas Jakucionis and Will Riley. NBA – Bulls take 18-year-old Noa Essengue at 12 in Central Division’s lone 1st round pick
The Chicago Bulls took a chance on the long-term upside of 18-year-old French forward Noa Essengue to highlight an otherwise quiet opening round of the NBA draft for Central Division teams. Chicago was the only Central team that entered the night with a first-round selection. The Bulls used the No. 12 pick on the 6-foot-9, 194-pound Essengue. He has been playing professionally in Germany for Ratiopharm Ulm the last two years. He left his team as it competed in the German league finals to be in New York for the draft. The other Central Division teams all have second-round picks Thursday.
NBA – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, says league taking serious look at Achilles tears
The NBA had already convened a panel of experts to study Achilles tendon injuries even before Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton ruptured his in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday night. The league had seven known Achilles injuries this season — Pacers forwards James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson, New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray and Miami guard Dru Smith had them in the regular season, while Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard and Haliburton then had them in the playoffs.
NHL – NHL and the players’ union have discussed going to an 84-game season in CBA talks,
Moving to an 84-game regular season from 82 is one of the topics that has been discussed in collective bargaining talks between the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association, a person with familiar with negotiations tells The Associated Press. The potential change that could go into effect as soon as 2026-27 would reduce the preseason to four games per team. Going to 84 games could also even out scheduling with the league at 32 teams playing each division opponent four times, three against the other division in the same conference and two against those in the other conference.
NASCAR – Prime Video’s NASCAR viewership averages 2.16 million as younger fans tune in
Prime Video averaged 2.16 million viewers for its five NASCAR Cup Series races this season. This marks the first year the streaming service aired NASCAR events under a seven-year deal. The average audience was down 17.6% compared to last year’s 2.62 million for the same races, some of which aired on Fox. There have been similar declines when other sports moved from broadcast to streaming. The average viewer age for Prime Video’s races was 56.1, nearly seven years younger than the 62.8 average for the season’s first 12 races.
