Tigers 3, Athletics 0 – Dietrich Enns throws 5 scoreless innings in return to majors as Tigers beat A’s 8-0
Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the majors as the Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 8-0. Enns gave up a single and two walks in his first game since he threw two scoreless innings for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 24, 2021. The 34-year-old pitched for the Seibu Lions in Japan from 2022-23 before going 13-6 last season for the LG Twins in South Korea. Jeffrey Springs allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers while Zach McKinstry had three hits, including a double and a triple. The win was the third of Enns’ MLB career. The first two came against Detroit on Sept. 11 and 16, 2021.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 0 – Shota Imanaga throws 5 sharp innings in return from injury as Cubs beat Cardinals 3-0
Shota Imanaga returned from the injured list to throw five innings of one-hit ball, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals for a split of a four-game series. Michael Busch homered and singled and Carson Kelly also had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs. St. Louis was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Five Chicago pitchers combined on a three-hitter. A left hamstring strain cost Imanaga nearly two months. In his Busch Stadium debut, Imanaga gave up a first-inning single to Masyn Winn and then retired 10 batters before issuing his lone walk.

Sparks 85, Fever 75 –Stevens, Plum each score 20-plus and the Sparks beat the short-handed Fever 85-75
Azura Stevens scored 23 points, Kelsey Plum had 21 points and six assists, and the Los Angeles Sparks ended a four-game losing streak by beating the short-handed Indiana Fever 85-75. Indiana played without Caitlin Clark, who was out with a groin injury. Hamby and Rickea Jackson each scored 14 points for Los Angeles, which improved to 5-11. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 20 points and Aliyah Boston had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. The Fever fell to 7-8.

Golf – Roy and Potgieter shoot Rocket Classic-record 62s to share 1st-round lead
Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter each shot 10-under 62 on Thursday to break the Rocket Classic record and share the first-round lead. Detroit Golf Club has been one of the easiest courses since the PGA Tour made it an annual stop in 2019. A pair of Korn Ferry graduates took full advantage. Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, started at No. 10 and set a tournament record with a 7-under 29 on the back nine. He added three birdies on his back nine and caught the left edge on a 12-foot putt on his final hole. Potgieter and Roy each had an eagle and eight birdies in bogey-free rounds. Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard were a stroke back.

Golf – Dryburgh and Porter post a 66 in alternate shot to lead Dow Championship
Gemma Dryburgh of Scotland and Cassie Porter of Australia lead the Dow Championship after one round of the LPGA’s only team event. The format was the more difficult foursomes at Midland Country Club. Dryburgh and Porter put some thought on who would drive off which tees and it paid off. Porter is an LPGA rookie and the longer of the two. She drove a par-4 green to set up birdie. Porter also chipped in for birdie. They have a one-shot lead over six teams. That includes the duo of Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang, and Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire.

NBA – Bulls Central rivals select older players in 2nd round
The only Central Division team with a first-round pick was the Chicago Bulls, who bet on Noa Essengue’s long-term upside by using the No. 12 overall pick on the 18-year-old French forward. A few of their Central rivals then added more experienced college players in Thursday’s second round. Indiana added a pair of 23-year-old guards, as they acquired the No. 38 pick from San Antonio to take Marquette’s Kam Jones and then chose Liberty’s Taelon Peter at No. 54. Detroit also added a 23-year-old guard by selecting Tennessee’s Chaz Lanier at No. 37, Lanier, a 6-4 guard who averaged 18 points his lone year at Tennessee after spending four seasons at North Florida.. With the first of its two second-round picks, Cleveland took 21-year-old Duke guard Tyrese Proctor at No. 49.

NFL – NFL suspends Tucker for 10 weeks for violating personal conduct policy
The NFL has suspended former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker for the first 10 weeks next season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The league announced the punishment Thursday. It takes effect on Aug. 26, which is roster cutdown day, and Tucker is eligible for reinstatement on Nov. 11. He is a free agent after the Ravens released him last month in the aftermath of reports that he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by massage therapists. A five-time All-Pro, the 35-year-old Tucker has played his entire 13-year career with Baltimore. He’s considered one of the best kickers in NFL history, although 2024 was his worst season.

NHL – NHL & NHLPA close to new 4-year CBA extension including an 84-game season
Two people familiar with negotiations tell The Associated Press the NHL and NHL Players’ Association are close to an agreement on a four-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement. They confirmed that going to an 84-game season from 82 is among the changes coming. The league and union have been in talks since April and are on the verge of a deal more than a year before the current CBA expires. Other changes include shortening the maximum length of contracts and adding a playoff salary cap.

NHL – Red Wings and Blackhawks again have lottery picks in NHL Draft
The 2025 NHL Draft is being held in Los Angeles this year, and the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks will be selecting early.  Chicago has the third overall pick, while the Red Wings who have now missed the playoffs for a franchise record 9th straight year will choose 13th in round 1.  Rounds 2-7 of the draft will be on Saturday.

NCAA – NCAA considers allowing college athletes, staff to bet on professional sports
The NCAA is considering a proposal to allow athletes and staff to bet on professional sports while maintaining strict bans on college sports betting. The Division I Council introduced the idea, which requires approval from Divisions II and III. The NCAA says this shift reflects the rise of legalized gambling and aims to focus enforcement on college sports integrity. Current rules already ban betting on NCAA sports, with severe penalties for violations. Officials argue this approach could better address gambling issues among athletes.

NCAA – Funding of Olympic sports a bargaining chip as NCAA seeks antitrust help
College sports leaders seeking antitrust and other protections from Congress have a potential bargaining chip: School assurances that they will provide funding for their increasingly imperiled Olympic programs, by far the biggest pipeline of talent for Team USA. Four people familiar with the talks tell The Associated Press that the discussions are ongoing. The idea is to find common ground that could help legislation win enough Democratic support make it through a narrowly divided Congress.
