A 69-year-old man died Saturday night in a house fire in the 72000 block of 36th Avenue in Covert Township.

The Covert Township Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at approximately 9:53 p.m. Sunday night. When crews arrived, witnesses told first responders that the homeowner was still inside the residence.

Fire personnel entered the burning home and successfully extinguished the blaze. During their efforts, firefighters located the homeowner, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Covert Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police are investigating the cause and an autopsy will be conducted. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
