An officer-involved shooting and foot pursuit happened early Sunday morning near the Phillips 66 gas station in the 1100 block of Pipestone Road in Benton Charter Township.

In a statement, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says they had been trying to clear a large gathering when they were alerted to the presence of a male suspect in a nearby vehicle who was wanted for a prior weapons complaint. When officers approached, the male fled on foot, leading officers on a chase.

One officer deployed a TASER, but it was ineffective. Officers say the suspect ran through the party crowd and back toward Pipestone, and grabbed onto a parked car. The driver of that vehicle attempted to flee, swerving toward one of the officers while the male suspect clung to the car window.

Officers say the vehicle then sped away at a high rate of speed with the male still holding on. It was at that point when the vehicle drove toward an officer — and that’s when the officer fired in self-defense.

The vehicle was eventually stopped on Pipestone near Ravina, and the male who had been holding onto the car was taken into custody. No injuries were reported from the gunfire. The suspect has been lodged at the Berrien County Jail.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety has requested the Michigan State Police conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
