
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has released the name of a man shot and killed by one of its deputies this week.
The department says the deputy was in the area of Third Street and Fort Street in Niles Township around 6 p.m. Monday he when he approached a vehicle. As he did so, its passenger ran off while the vehicle sped off southbound on Third Street. A foot chase then ensued with the man who ran off.
The sheriff’s department says at one point, the fleeing suspect fired a gun at the deputy. The deputy returned fire, killing the suspect.
The department now says Michigan State Police have been able to make notification of the family of the deceased, who has been identified as 48-year-old Joshua B. Coffey of South Bend. He’s described as a white male.
The deputy involved in the shooting is currently on leave while Michigan State Police review the incident.
