The Michigan Department of Transportation is doing what it can to get out of the way this Fourth of July weekend.

MDOT Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us where they can, they’re suspending road construction projects.

“Statewide, we are obviously lifting as many restrictions as possible letting traffic move as smoothly as possible over the holiday weekend you know it’s the big midsummer holiday you know it’s the big midsummer holiday probably lots of folks on the road this weekend

Schirripa says some projects can’t just be totally swept to the side, but beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, 110 out of 179 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed.

Here in the Southwest region, we’re removing, we’re starting on 18 of 31 projects, including several down along the lakeshore. There will be some that remain in place, and those are probably worth noting only because we’re going to have lots of folks on the roads.”

Some projects in Southwest Michigan that simply can’t be suspended are the big I-94 work between St. Joseph and Stevensville, I-196 work in Van Buren County, and a project at US-12 and Mayflower Road near Niles.

Schirripa reminds everyone to give themselves plenty of travel time this weekend and to ditch the distractions when behind the wheel.
