Tigers 11, Nationals 2 – Game 1 – Riley Greene homers twice as Tigers rout Nationals 11-2 in doubleheader opener
Riley Greene hit a pair of three-run homers and matched a career high with six RBIs, leading the Detroit Tigers over the Washington Nationals 11-2 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson also homered while Zach McKinstry had four hits for Detroit, which has won three in a row and six of eight. The Tigers at 54-32 moved 22 games over .500 for the first time since finishing 2013 at 93-69. Alex Call had three hits for Washington, which has not won consecutive games since May 28-31 and has lost nine of its last 10 at home.
Nationals 9, Tigers 4 – Game 2 – Lowe’s 3-run triple helps Nationals past Tigers 9-4 for a doubleheader split
Nathaniel Lowe hit a go-ahead triple with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and finished with four RBIs as the Washington Nationals rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 for a doubleheader split. Josh Bell had three RBIs for Washington, which won at home for only the second time in 11 home games since June 7. Jahmai Jones had two RBIs for Detroit. The Tigers had won three in a row, including an 11-2 victory in the first game as Riley Greene hit two homers and tied a career high with six RBIs.
Cubs 5, Guardians 4 – Crow-Armstrong and Suzuki lead Imanaga, Cubs to 5-4 victory over Guardians
Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits and two RBIs after being chosen an All-Star starter for the first time in his career, Shota Imanaga won his second straight start since returning from a hamstring injury and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Wednesday. Seiya Suzuki added two hits and three RBIs for the Cubs, who have opened July with consecutive victories over Cleveland after dropping seven of their final 11 in June. They lead the NL Central at 51-35. Carlos Santana, Lane Thomas and David Fry hit solo home runs for Cleveland, which has dropped six straight and fell to 40-44.
Dodgers 5, White Sox 4 – Dodgers rally past White Sox in 9th inning; Kershaw reaches 3,000 strikeouts
Clayton Kershaw has reached 3,000 strikeouts, becoming the 20th pitcher to reach the milestone. He struck out Vinny Capra in the sixth inning during the Dodgers’ 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Freddie Freeman capped a three-run ninth inning with a single that scored Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers have won 14 of their last 17 games and clinched their seventh consecutive series win. Los Angeles third baseman Max Muncy left the game with a knee injury after tagging out Michael A. Taylor, who also sustained a minor injury while caught stealing.

MLB – Tigers place OF Kerry Carpenter on injured list with right hamstring strain
The Detroit Tigers have placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. The 27-year-old is hitting .257 with 16 homers and 32 RBIs this season. He was lifted in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game against Minnesota for a pinch runner. Manager A.J. Hinch indicated Carpenter will not return before the All-Star break. Detroit recalled infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo to take Carpenter’s roster spot before Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Washington Nationals.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have three fan-elected starters in the All-Star Game, with first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith joining designated hitter Shohei Ohtani as winners in final ballot totals. Detroit will have three fan-picked starters for the first time since 2007 after second baseman Gleyber Torres along with outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Báez were voted in at their positions for the July 15 game at Atlanta’s Truist Park. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs were picked for the NL outfield along with Ronald Acuña Jr. of the host Braves.

Detroit’s account emphasized its strong sports culture and the former Shock franchise’s attendance success. Good news, basketball fans: Red Panda intends to be ready for next season. Red Panda, the popular performer who fell off her unicycle and crashed to the court during intermission of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final between the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx, has a broken left wrist and will need further consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, the agency that represents her said Wednesday. Red Panda — her real name is Rong Niu — spent 11 hours in a Minneapolis hospital, with a pair of Lynx staffers there with her the entire time, agent Patrick Figley said. The Chinese American acrobat was heading home for treatment and recovery, which should take a few months.
NBA – Knicks offer coaching job to Mike Brown and are working on a deal, AP source says
A person with knowledge of the details says the New York Knicks have offered their coaching job to Mike Brown and are working to finalize a deal with the two-time NBA Coach of the Year. Brown would replace Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last month despite leading the Knicks to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. He had his second interview with the Knicks on Tuesday before the job was offered, the person told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because details of the search were to remain private.
NBA – Beasley should be in demand after a career year; Off-court issues are changing that
Malik Beasley should be riding high right now, after a season where he became just the fifth player in NBA history to make at least 300 shots from 3-point range in a single season. Instead, his future seems very uncertain. He’s a free agent and facing some serious off-court issues — including being part of an investigation surrounding what’s believed to be unusual betting patterns on games and now some unrelated legal matters involving his personal finances. Beasley has not been charged with any crime.
NHL – Nikolaj Ehlers remains unsigned, Brent Burns joins Colorado in NHL free agency
Nikolaj Ehlers has still not chosen his destination and remains the top player available in NHL free agency. Ehlers wanted to take his time, and his camp watched as fellow winger Brock Boeser re-signed in Vancouver for seven years and older forward Mikael Granlund get $7 million annually from Anaheim. With the salary cap increasing a record amount, Ehlers could sign the most lucrative contract among players changing teams this summer. Brent Burns agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Colorado
Golf – PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup bonus goes from a lump sum to one winner to 3 payoffs
The PGA Tour is changing how it pays $100 million in bonus money for the FedEx Cup. Instead of the FedEx Cup champion getting a $25 million bonus at the end of the Tour Championship, there will be payouts at two other points along the way. The top player going into the postseason gets a $10 million bonus. The No. 1 seed after the second event at the BMW Championship will get $5 million. And the winner of the Tour Championship gets $10 million. If the No. 1 seed stays on top throughout the postseason, he still gets $25 million.
FIFA – Luna scores two to lead US over Guatemala 2-1 and into CONCACAF Gold Cup final
Diego Luna scored twice in the first 15 minutes, and the United States hung on to beat Guatemala 2-1 to reach its first CONCACAF Gold Cup final since 2021. Luna put the U.S. ahead with a left-footed shot in the fourth minute, then scored with his right in the 15th for his third goal in two games. Olger Escobar scored in the 80th for Guatemala. The U.S. plays defending champion Mexico for the title Sunday at Houston.
FIFA – Pochettino says pro-visitor crowd in St. Louis was `like to play in Guatemala’
The U.S. men’s soccer team advanced to the CONCACAF Gold Cup final against Mexico after a 2-1 win over Guatemala. Coach Mauricio Pochettino said the sellout crowd of 22,423 at Energizer Park, which rooted overwhelmingly for the visitors, was “like to play in Guatemala.” Diego Luna scored in the fourth and 15th minutes for the U.S., giving him three goals in the tournament. Sunday’s final in Houston will be the Americans’ last competitive match before next year’s World Cup.
FIFA – Claire Hutton scores first international goal to help the US beat Canada 3-0
Claire Hutton scored her first international goal as the U.S. beat Canada 3-0 in a friendly. Sam Coffey and Yazmeen Ryan also found the net. The Americans have five straight wins by a combined score of 18-0 since losing to Brazil in April. Hutton’s goal came in the 36th minute off a corner kick by Rose Lavelle, who also helped set up Coffey’s earlier goal. This was the third game in seven days for the U.S., following two 4-0 wins over Ireland. The Americans face South Korea and Japan in September.
