Law enforcement officials have confirmed the identity of the suspect killed in a shootout with a Berrien County Sheriff’s deputy earlier this week.
The deceased has now been identified as 48-year-old Joshua Coffey from South Bend.
As reported previously, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says one of its deputies was in Niles Township in the area of Third and Fort streets around 6 p.m. on Monday, June 30. When the deputy was investigating a parked vehicle, one of its occupants ran and the vehicle’s driver sped off.
Police say the deputy was pursuing Coffey who fled on foot when the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the deputy. The deputy then fired back, killing Coffey.
The Sheriff’s office says the incident remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police 5th District Special Investigation Section. No further information was released about the individuals involved or possible reasons the suspect ran from law enforcement.
