The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says no police are injured after a suspect threw a pipe bomb at them during a standoff on Friday.
The department says deputies were sent to the 28,000 block of County Road 388 near Gobles around 11 a.m. on a report of a wanted fugitive believed to be staying in a camper. They had a a warrant.
As the deputies approached the camper, the 58-year-old suspect allegedly set off a pipe bomb inside. The deputies retreated and called for assistance from the Van Buren County SWAT team.
Upon arrival, SWAT personnel began negotiations with the suspect, urging him to surrender. The suspect refused, saying he didn’t want to go back to prison and threatening to kill all police on scene.
SWAT then fired tear gas into the camper and the suspect allegedly came out and threw a pipe bomb at officers. It detonated, and moments later, the suspect allegedly threw another pipe bomb, which also detonated.
As the suspect stood in the doorway, a SWAT officer fired off a “less-lethal shotgun,” striking the suspect twice. The suspect then surrendered and was taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Following the arrest, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad responded and found an additional pipe bomb, which police say was safely destroyed. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab was also called to the scene to help with processing evidence.
