The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold an open house this month on the Cook nuclear power plant’s safety record in 2024.
NRC spokesperson Viktoria Mitlyng tells us NRC inspectors and Cook staff will be on hand for the gathering to answer any questions the public might have.
“It’s really an opportunity for people to talk to us about what we do, how we do it, how is the plant doing, what kind of inspections we did last year, what kind of inspections we’re doing this year,” Mitlyng said.
The NRC holds these open houses periodically. Mitlyng says the Cook plant had no major issues in 2024.
“The plant operated safely. There were no findings that were above very low safety significance. So, what that means is it’s the highest performance category.”
The open house will be Thursday, July 10 at the Silver Beach Center in St. Joseph. That’s the carousel. It will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Mitlyng says because this is an open house, there will be no formal presentation and anyone can just drop in at any time to talk with NRC inspectors.
