Small-business owners and farmers from Michigan and across the country are voicing concern as uncertainty grows over the future of federal trade tariffs.

A 90-day pause on federal tariffs expired last Wednesday without new trade deals, leaving businesses facing fresh tariff notices.

In a recent webinar hosted by Farmers for Free Trade and Tariffs Cost US, Rachel Lutz, the owner of a specialty boutique in Detroit, called this the most challenging time she’s faced as a small-business owner.

We are competing against big, big players that ahead of the tariffs going into effect, they were able to ship massive amounts of inventory, warehouse them to buffer their impact from these tariffs,” Lutz said. “Small businesses like mine don’t have that capability.”

According to a report earlier this year from small business network, Alignable, owners of small businesses in states including New York and California expressed concern about tariffs.

However, about 19% of small business owners believe tariffs will boost their income and strengthen the U.S. economy, in the long run.
