The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department is saluting some of its 911 dispatchers for their quick action to help others during severe weather back in May.

The Van Buren County 911 Advisory Board this week recognized five dispatchers for their service on May 16. Sheriff Dan Abbott says a storm brought damaging winds and widespread chaos, resulting in an overwhelming volume of emergency calls, but the dispatchers handled them all calmly and with professionalism.

Abbott says the team within one hour “managed over 300 calls to 911 and an additional 200 non-emergency calls, all while maintaining calm, clear communication, and unwavering dedication to public safety.” He says their “ability to remain courteous and focused under pressure — both on the phone and over the dispatch radio — is a testament to their commitment to serving the citizens of Van Buren County.”

The dispatchers are Supervisor Mike Hostetler, Emily Stroh, Alison Dean, Kristen Featherston, and Bree Smiles. Each member of the shift received a Letter of Commendation in recognition of their efforts that night.
