It’s about two weeks until a primary election in Benton Harbor, and the city clerk is reminding residents what they need to do to ensure they receive their absentee ballots.
Speaking to city commissioners Monday, Clerk Tiffany Moore said her office has seen a problem with the absentee ballots it sent out.
“We have sent out 963 ballots,” Moore said. “We have only received back 237 valid ballots, and I say that because we have a stack that have been returned from people that have moved and ballots cannot be forwarded. So we’ve gotten a lot of ballots back from people that have moved and not changed their address.”
Moore said election materials like ballots have to be sent to the voter directly, so if someone moves without notifying the state or clerk’s office, they will not receive their absentee ballot in the mail.
In the August 5 primary, one at-large seat on the Benton Harbor City Commission is on the ballot. The candidates are Duane Seats, Mary Alice Adams, Jerry Edwards, Deidre Fields, and Shaquille Turner. Voters are being told to select two candidates who will then go on to appear on the November ballot.
