The city of Benton Harbor has received a statewide award for its community master plan.

Speaking to city commissioners this week, Benton Harbor Planning Commission Chair Lee Reed said the Michigan Association of Planning has chosen the city for its Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan.

They choose the best planning or plans that have been submitted and nominated for that recognition,” Reed said. “Benton Harbor was one of those that qualified and we were nominated and we won.”

Reed said the “Best Benton Harbor Master Plan” was developed throughout 2023, taking into consideration several questions that are likely to be raised in the coming years.

The city is currently experiencing intensive growth and redevelopment. Benton Harbor is wrestling to balance the urgent need for investment with mitigating the unrepairable risks of gentrification and cultural displacement.”

Reed said the plan was developed with the aid of focus groups, town halls, surveys, and participation at community events. That’s because Reed said the intent was for the plan to be implemented by the people who created it.

Reed said the Michigan Association of Planning commended Benton Harbor for the “boldness” of the master plan. You can see it right here.
