A 4-year-old boy is alive thanks to the quick action of a Michigan State Police trooper over the weekend.

It was a tense and scary scene as a child was pulled from the water Saturday after he was found face down, not breathing, south of Newaygo in west Michigan. Trooper Casey Deater was not far from the location when she heard the call.

My first thing was I just, I know that I needed to, ‘I want to save him,’” Deater said. “‘I want to do anything in my power to save him.’”

Deater rushed to the doc, got there in time to start chest compressions until the child began responding.

And then I heard him start to respond to the chest compressions and some of the breath. So once I heard a noise, I kind of tilted his head and he started to spit up water.”

By the time paramedics arrived, the boy was awake. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Trooper Dieter is now being called a hero.
