Pirates 8, Tigers 5 – Horwitz, Reynolds, Pham star in Pirates’ 8-5 victory over skidding Tigers
Spencer Horwitz, Bryan Reynolds and Tommy Pham each had three hits and two RBIs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates hit eight doubles in an 8-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Horwitz hit a two-run double in the second inning to open the scoring. The Pirates, who had lost 11 of their previous 12 games, have taken the first two games of the series from the AL Central leaders. Reynolds had RBI singles in the third and sixth and Pham doubled in a run in the sixth as the Pirates increased their lead to 8-3. The Tigers have lost eight of their last nine games.

Rays 4, White Sox 3 – Rays edge White Sox 4-3, snap Chicago’s 5-game winning streak
José Caballero had two hits and two RBIs and the Tampa Bay Rays scored all their runs in the second inning before holding on for a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. The loss was Chicago’s first since the All-Star break and snapped a season-high five-game winning streak. Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, walking one and striking out five. It was just the fifth time Rasmussen didn’t complete five innings, so Edwin Uceta (7-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Pete Fairbanks pitched the ninth for his 17th save.

Cubs 6, Royals 0 – Matthew Boyd sharp for 11th win, Cubs blank Royals and Rich Hill 6-0.
Matthew Boyd pitched seven crisp innings for his 11th win, and the Chicago Cubs spoiled Rich Hill’s return to the majors with a 6-0 win over the Kansas City Royals. Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw each had two hits as Chicago ended a two-game slide. Boyd (11-3) gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one in winning his fifth straight start. The left-hander retired the first eight Royals batters and didn’t allow a hit until Nick Loftin led off the fifth with a line single. Caleb Thielbar followed with a perfect eighth and Daniel Palencia worked around two singles in the ninth to complete a six-hitter. Hill (0-1) became the oldest active player in baseball after the Royals selected the 45-year-old from Triple-A Omaha.

MLB – Rich Hill becomes oldest player in majors at 45 with start against Cubs
Kansas City’s Rich Hill seemed a bit rusty in his return to the majors as baseball’s oldest active player. His Royals teammates didn’t make the 45-year-old left-hander’s start against the Cubs any easier. Hill gave up three runs and six hits over five innings in his first major league appearance since last September with Boston. He threw 90 pitches (55 strikes), walking two and striking out one. He left with Chicago leading 3-0. Hill’s start at Wrigley Field marked the debut of his 21st season in the majors and his first with Kansas City. The Royals are his 14th major league team, matching Edwin Jackson’s record. Hill became the oldest player to start a major league game since May 27, 2012, when lefty Jamie Moyer tossed his final game with Colorado at age 49.

NCAAFB – Big Ten notebook: Hoosiers ready to prove they’re no one-hit wonder
After a surprising 10-0 start, a program-record 11 wins and a trip to the College Football Playoff, some believe Indiana is destined to take a step backward in 2025. Coach Curt Cignetti and his team, however, didn’t get the memo. The coach said at Bif Ten football media days on Tuesday that he’s looking to improve on the most surprising story of the 2024 football season. He says the Hoosiers can do it by having all the right people in place to make an encore.

NCAAFB – No support for SEC’s at-large bid preference for College Football Playoff
The Big Ten commissioner is reiterating the league’s preference for multiple automatic qualifiers in the next version of the College Football Playoff, increasing the likelihood of a showdown with the Southeastern Conference when the format for 2026 is decided. Commissioner Tony Petitti says any change that adds at-large bids and increases the discretion and role of a selection committee — a format the SEC and others have shown a preference for — “will have a difficult time getting support of the Big Ten.”

WNBA – Clark’s injury woes continue, misses second straight game against New York
Caitlin Clark missed her second straight game against New York while recovering from an injury to her right groin. The Fever’s star guard also was absent from the team’s game against the Liberty before the All-Star break. She was supposed to compete in the 3-point contest as well as Saturday’s All-Star Game, but missed both events. Clark told reporters on Saturday night that she had been getting treatment during the festivities, which took place in Indianapolis. She was injured in the final minute of last Tuesday’s victory at Connecticut.

Olympics – US officials bar transgender women from competing in Olympic women’s sports
The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has barred transgender women from competing in women’s sports. The committee is citing an executive order from President Donald Trump. The order, signed in February, threatens to cut funding for organizations allowing transgender athletes in women’s sports. The policy is listed under the USOPC Athlete Safety Policy and follows a similar move by the NCAA earlier this year. National governing bodies for various sports like swimming and track and field are expected to comply with the directive.

NFL – Bears coach Ben Johnson sets lofty goal for QB Caleb Williams to start camp
Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson wants to see a 70% completion rate from quarterback Caleb Williams in their first year together as the team opened training camp Tuesday at Halas Hall. Williams says he also aims to become the franchise’s first 4,000-yard passer and he’ll be protected by an improved offensive line and has more playmakers to try and do it. One of the offensive line questions is left tackle, but the Bears will have starter Braxton Jones back from ankle surgery when practices begin. However, cornerback Jaylon Johnson is out at the outset with an unspecified leg injury.

Tennis – Venus Williams becomes oldest woman since Navratilova to win a singles match
Venus Williams has become the oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match since Martina Navratilova. Williams delivered some of her familiar big serves and groundstrokes at age 45 while beating Peyton Stearns — a player who is 22 years younger — by a 6-3, 6-4 score at the DC Open. Tuesday night’s victory in Washington was the first for Williams in nearly two years. Navratilova was 47 in 2004 when she won for the final time. The former No. 1-ranked Williams had not played singles in an official match since March 2024 in Miami, missing time while having surgery to remove uterine fibroids.
