Jack Flaherty pitched six scoreless innings, Gleyer Torres hit a three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers ended a six-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Flaherty (6-10) allowed a double and four singles. He struck out seven and walked one to end a seven-start winless streak. Max Scherzer (1-1), pitching on his 41st birthday, fell to 2-3 in five career starts against his former team. He allowed three hits in seven innings, including Torres’ homer, and struck out 11 without issuing a walk.

MLB – Ichiro Suzuki adds humorous touches to Hall of Fame induction ceremonies
If you want someone for your next celebrity roast, Ichiro Suzuki could be your guy. Mixing sneaky humor with heartfelt messages, the first Japanese-born player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame stole the show Sunday in Cooperstown. Morning showers and gloomy skies delayed the ceremonies by an hour, but the moisture gave way to bright skies and warm temperatures. The sun seemed its brightest during Suzuki’s acceptance speech. The outfielder was joined by pitcher CC Sabathia, also elected in his first year of eligibility, and closer Billy Wagner, who made it in his final try on the writers’ ballot. Suzuki fell one vote shy of being a unanimous selection and he took a jab at the unidentified sports writer who didn’t vote for him.
MLB – Misiorowski gets his first shot at the Cubs
Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski already has won matchups with Paul Skenes and Clayton Kershaw and has pitched in the All-Star Game since reaching the major leagues six weeks ago. So forgive the 23-year-old right-hander if he isn’t getting overly caught up in the atmosphere surrounding his first matchup with the Chicago Cubs. The two NL Central rivals share the best record in the National League as they prepare to begin a three-game series in Milwaukee. Monday’s series opener is an All-Star pitching matchup featuring Misiorowski and Chicago’s Matthew Boyd.

Fever 93, Sky 78 – Mitchell’s 35 points lift Fever over Sky 93-78; Clark and Reese sit out
Kelsey Mitchell hit seven 3-pointers and scored 35 points and the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 93-78 in a marquee matchup that was missing stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark missed her fourth-straight game for Indiana with a groin injury and has only played in half of the team’s games and Reese was out for her second straight for the Sky with a back issue. Aliyah Boston had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Fever, who have three double-figure wins over Chicago this season. Rachel Banham had six 3s and 26 points for the Sky.
NASCAR – Wallace becomes first Black driver to win a major race on Indianapolis’ oval
Bubba Wallace became the first Black driver to win a major race on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval, surviving a late rain delay, two overtimes, concerns over running out of fuel and a hard-charging Kyle Larson on Sunday in the Brickyard 400. The third NASCAR Cup victory of Wallace’s career was also his most significant — his first win at one of the series’ four crown jewel races. It snapped a 100-race winless streak that dated to 2022 at Kansas. He also won at Talladega in 2021, but this milestone victory also gave him a playoff spot. No Black driver has won the Indianapolis 500, and Formula 1 raced on the track’s road course. And while the final gap was 0.222 seconds, Wallace didn’t reach victory lane without some consternation.
Cycling – Tadej Pogačar wins his fourth Tour de France title in style
The roads were dangerously slippery after heavy rain. A fourth Tour de France title was all but won anyway, so finishing safely in the pack would do fine for Tadej Pogačar. Especially considering Sunday’s final stage had already been neutralized for safety reasons. Surely there was no need to launch a seemingly pointless attack and risk crashing? But holding back or being cautious rarely appeals to Pogačar. The 26-year-old cycling star from Slovenia finished fourth in the stage but clinched his fourth Tour title in inimitably daring style and further cemented his place among cycling’s greats. Two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard was overall runner-up again and Florian Lipowitz was third for his first major-race podium.
NBA – Bulls and coach Billy Donovan agree to a contract extension
The Chicago Bulls and coach Billy Donovan have agreed to a contract extension. The team did not reveal the length or financial terms of the contract. Donovan has a 195-205 record with one playoff appearance in five seasons as the Bulls’ coach. Chicago went 39-43 for the second straight season and finished ninth in the Eastern Conference before getting knocked out of the play-in tournament by Miami for the third year in a row with a blowout loss at home. Donovan is 438-362 in 10 seasons as an NBA head coach. He led Oklahoma City to a 243-157 record in five seasons. Donovan previously spent 19 seasons at Florida and won back-to-back NCAA titles. He is set to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September.
Golf – Lottie Woad wins the Women’s Scottish Open in her pro debut
Lottie Woad hasn’t wasted any time making a big impression. The English star won the Women’s Scottish Open in her professional debut. And the 21-year-old made it look as though she had been there before. Woad shot a 68 at breezy Dundonald Links for a three-shot victory over Hyo Joo Kim. Woad won the Women’s Irish Open as an amateur three weeks ago. Then she missed a playoff in an LPGA major in France. She locked up an LPGA Tour card with that finish and turned pro. And now the former Florida State star is a winner on the LPGA.
Golf – Kitayama wins 3M Open, beating Sam Stevens by 1 for his 2nd PGA Tour victory
Kurt Kitayama has his second PGA Tour victory. He won the 3M Open in Minnesota on Sunday, closing with a 65 for a total of 23-under 261 to beat Sam Stevens by one stroke. Kitayama shot a career-best 60 on Saturday to move within one shot of the co-leaders. He birdied six of the first eight holes on Sunday for a comfortable lead and withstood a bogey on the 17th hole. He two-putted for par on 18 to secure his win with Stevens finished. Kitayama moved to 53rd in the FedEx Cup standings, safely in position to make the playoffs.
