We’re seeing a drop in the population of Kirtland’s Warblers in Michigan, and efforts are underway to increase their habitat.

A recent survey shows there are more than 1,400 breeding pairs of Kirtland’s warblers in Michigan, down from a few years ago.

Michigan is home to 98% of the global population of the songbirds, which were once endangered. Michigan Department of Natural Resources silviculturist Jason Hartman says they’re important for Michigan’s economy.

“It was our large effort that we went through to create a lot of habitat to get it off the endangered species list,” Hartman said. “So, beyond that, it also brings in people, so birdwatchers, ecotourism, all that kind of thing is becoming a bigger deal nowadays. It seems to be a growing market for sure.”

Hartman says the Kirtland’s Warblers love Jack pine trees, and the DNR is working to establish some Jack pines forests for them.
