A resurfacing project is about to get started on Cleveland Avenue in St. Joseph.

St. Joseph City Engineer and Assistant City Manager Tim Zebell tells us the work has been delayed a couple of times due to the strain on contractors, but it’s now scheduled to start August 11.

Cleveland Avenue from Hilltop Road to Lakeshore Drive will be, actually the entire depth of asphalt pavement in this case, will be milled down to the gravel and then we’ll come back in and pave it with three layers of asphalt, if you will, to restore the road surface,” Zebell said.

The road will be closed to through traffic during the work.

When you get down to the gravel, it’s not going to be the greatest surface to travel on, but there are some properties there, including the Lake Crest Ravines apartments, that that’s their sole source of access.”

So, traffic will be allowed through for those residents.

Zebell says this $560,000 project is possible thanks to a $460,000 federal grant, and it will include some sidewalk and manhole work. The project should be completed in mid-September.

Meanwhile, Zebell reminds everyone the Botham Avenue reconstruction project will start August 8. That’ll be on Botham from South State Street to Niles Avenue, and it will result in the closure of South State at Botham as well as some disruptions on Niles.

Zebell says north-south travel in the city is about to get a little difficult, but the projects will be worthwhile.
