Michigan sheriff is speaking out against a Trump administration order directing police departments to remove homeless people off the streets.
Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia Dyer says President Trump’s executive order to forcibly remove homeless people from the streets will criminalize poverty and she wants no part of it. Sheriff Dyer says there is research showing that criminalizing homelessness does not work.
“In Washtenaw County, we treat substance use, mental health, and housing as a public health crisis,” Dyer said. “I just wanted to make it very clear to the local community that we are going to be investing in what’s going to actually work to get people the help and resources they need.”
President Trump signed the order last week.
