A Dowagiac man is facing charges after a break-in and assault in Lincoln Township on Saturday.

The Lincoln Township Police Department says officers were called to a home in the 5,600 block of Karen Court in the village of Stevensville around 1:30 a.m. on a report of a home invasion in progress. Upon arrival, the officers heard screaming in some nearby woods. They then found the suspect in the woods while additional units made contact with the residents of the home.

The investigation found the male suspect forced his way into the home where a woman and her young children were sleeping. He then allegedly assaulted the woman after she confronted him. A second man, who had been with the suspect earlier in the evening, then entered and forced the suspect to leave. The suspect then ran into the woods.

The victim called 911 from a neighbor’s home and was later taken to Corewell Health in St. Joseph for treatment of her injuries. The children were not injured.

The 33-year-old suspect was also treated for injuries. He’s now in the the Berrien County Jail on three felony charges while the case remains under investigation.

Police say the victim does not know the suspect.

The Lincoln Township Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Department, the St. Joseph Township Police Department, and and Medic 1 Ambulance Service.
