People shouldn’t have to be reminded about this, but safety officials have a message for drivers: stop for red lights.

Police say nearly 12,000 people were killed by people running red lights between 2004 and 2018, and about 139,000 were injured. Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw says running red lights is very dangerous.

We just remind drivers that those lights are there for a reason and to drive safely as they proceed through those intersections because you always have to be a defensive driver and make sure that you’re watching for the mistakes that those other drivers are making out there,” Shaw said.

Shaw says other big problems are distracted driving, excessive speed, and following too closely.

This is Stop on Red Week, which was created by the Federal Highway and Safety Administration in 1995 to reduce the severity of crashes.
