Yoendrys Gómez struck out seven in five innings, Edgar Quero had three hits and three RBIs, and the Chicago White Sox scored five runs in the fifth inning in a 9-6 win over the Detroit Tigers. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty and Gómez (1-1) traded three scoreless innings before Wenceel Pérez broke through for the Tigers in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Kerry Carpenter. Chicago tied the game in the fifth inning on an infield single from Curtis Mead that drove in Kyle Teel. Colson Montgomery also had a two-run single in the inning. Jordan Leasure earned his fourth save of the season. The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes by rain.
Blue Jays 5, Cubs 1 – Clement and Varsho homer as the Blue Jays reach 70 wins with a 5-1 victory over the Cubs
Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays became the first AL team to reach 70 wins by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the AL East-leading Blue Jays improved to 23-11 against NL opponents. The Cubs have dropped five of seven. In those five losses, they scored a total of six runs. Toronto right-hander José Berríos allowed two hits, both singles, in 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

MLB – Shohei Ohtani and agent accused of sabotaging $240M Hawaii real estate deal
A Hawaii real estate investor and broker are suing baseball star Shohei Ohtani. They claim the Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player and his agent got them fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Big Island’s coveted Hapuna Coast that they brought him in to endorse. According to the lawsuit filed in Hawaii Circuit Court, Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, increasingly demanded concessions before ultimately demanding that their business partner drop them from the deal. The development includes 14 houses averaging $17.3 million apiece. Ohtani was advertised as the first resident.

Wings 81, Fever 80 – Maddy Siegrist scores 22 and Dallas holds on for an 81-80 win
Maddy Siegrist tied a career high with 22 points in her first start since June 6, Li Yueru added 20 points off the bench, and the Dallas Wings held off the Indiana Fever 81-80 to end a five-game losing streak. Paige Bueckers finished with 16 points and eight assists for Dallas. Kelsey Mitchell had 24 points and four 3-pointers for Indiana. Natasha Howard had 12 points and 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double this season. The Wings a 78-61 lead with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter. but Indiana closed the game on a 19-3 run.

WNBA – WNBA ratings and attendance are still strong despite top stars missing games
Even with many of its top stars sidelined, the WNBA has still had strong ratings and attendance numbers this season. Injuries have kept Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese out, but that hasn’t dampened fan interest. ESPN games are up slightly over last season and games on ABC are up 17%. Attendance has also still been strong, thanks to the addition of the Golden State Valkyries, who have sold out all of their home games. Still, it’s not all been rosy with negative attention coming with a number of sex toys being thrown on the court at various arenas.
NCAAFB – Oklahoma QB Mateer denies gambling, says transaction titles were jokes
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer denies allegations of sports gambling after a report showed he made Venmo payments labeled for “sports gambling” in 2022. Mateer, who was at Washington State at the time, said Tuesday these were inside jokes with friends and not actual bets. He assured his teammates, coaches, and the NCAA that he has never gambled on sports. Oklahoma confirmed there is no NCAA investigation and states they use ProhiBet to monitor gambling activities. Mateer is recognized for his leadership and is considered one of the nation’s top transfers, contributing to Oklahoma’s No. 18 ranking in the AP Top 25.
NCAAFB – No. 2 Penn State primed to make run at first Big Ten title since 2016
The stage is set for Penn State, and now the question is whether the second-ranked Nittany Lions will capitalize. Penn State goes into the season with a three-year starter in Drew Allar, a pair of 1,000-yard rushers and a top-10 defense with first-year coordinator Jim Knowles. Lions coach James Franklin says it’s his best roster of staff and players in his 12 seasons. No. 3 Ohio State and No. 7 Oregon are poised to return to the playoff if their new quarterbacks keep the offenses on the rails. No. 12 Illinois is a team on the rise.
UFC – White says UFC Fight at White House is happening as part of deal with Paramount
Paramount and UFC have announced a billion-dollar rights deal, marking a significant shift for the fight company. UFC CEO Dana White is set to meet with Donald Trump to discuss a proposed Fourth of July fight card at the White House. The seven-year deal with Paramount, starting in 2026, is worth $1.1 billion annually. It will feature all UFC content on Paramount+ and select events on CBS. This deal simplifies offerings for fans and could impact fighter pay. White is optimistic about the future, aiming to elevate UFC’s status in the sports world.
LLWS – Little League World Series has had its share of drama before Williamsport
The Little League World Series features players from Venezuela who got visa exemptions to make the trip to central Pennsylvania, an American team that knocked off the defending champ and once-dominant Taiwan trying for a title run. It all starts with a new ESPN film to get youth baseball fans excited for the annual tournament. Airing the night before the LLWS begins Wednesday, ESPN is releasing the Little League documentary “Big Dreams: Little League World Series 2024."
