A Berrien County sheriff’s deputy has been recognized for life-saving actions she took during a medical emergency in the jail.

Berrien County Deputy Bailey Kessler received a Certificate of Commendation during the Board of Commission’s public meeting on Thursday.

Berrien County Undersheriff Greg Sanders said on June 10, a female inmate with a tracheotomy had just completed a breathing treatment when her air passage became blocked, preventing the inmate from breathing, and causing her oxygen levels to drop dangerously low. Sanders said Kessler responded and saved the woman’s life.

“We are so thankful that deputy Bailey Kessler was there, took charge, problem solved, tried different things, and was able to free up that blockage. If it wasn’t for her quick thinking, things could have been different there. We greatly appreciate what she does for us.”

The inmate was transported to the hospital by Medic One and returned to the jail a few hours later. Officials credited Kessler’s quick thinking and decisive actions with resolving the emergency and preventing a worse outcome.
