Michigan State Police are joining agencies statewide in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign starting Friday and running through Sept. 1.

Michigan State Police 5th District Public Information Officer Lt. DuWayne Robinson said the enforcement effort aims to reduce deaths and injuries on Michigan roads by raising awareness of the dangers of impaired driving, whether from alcohol or drugs.

“Our number one goal as law enforcement agencies is preventing death,” Robinson said. “When you make a decision to drive under the influence of whatever it may be, you’re endangering the lives of others on the roadway, those in your vehicle, and yourself.”

Robinson said motorists can expect high-visibility patrols and targeted enforcement during the campaign, with officers conducting field sobriety tests and making arrests when necessary. He noted that data show August has a higher-than-average rate of impaired driving arrests and related fatalities.

The campaign covers all impairing substances, including marijuana. Robinson encouraged drivers to plan ahead if they expect to consume alcohol or other substances.

“Find a sober driver to take you home,” he said. “Make a plan whenever you’re going to be consuming substances that may impair your driving.”
