The Chicago Bears have signed backup quarterback Tyson Bagent to a two-year contract extension through the 2027 season. Chicago also signed veteran running back Royce Freeman and placed running back Deion Hankins on injured reserve with a quad injury. Coach Ben Johnson announced cornerback Terell Smith will miss the season after being carted off the field with a knee injury in Sunday’s preseason win over Buffalo. Bagent’s made a big impression over two seasons. Undrafted in 2023 following a record-setting career at Division II powerhouse Shepherd University, Bagent played in five games that year and made four starts while leading Chicago to two wins with Justin Fields injured. He completed 66% of his passes for 859 yards with 3 TD and 6 interceptions.

WNBA –Clark misses another practice as Fever call her prospect of return ‘status quo’
Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark has missed another practice with her injured right groin and coach Stephanie White still does not have a timetable for her star’s return. Clark has not played since hurting her groin in the final minute of a game July 15 at Connecticut. Three different muscle injuries this season have forced Clark to sit out 22 games including the last 13. White is simply hoping Clark returns for some of her team’s last nine regular-season games. White told reporters Wednesday that until Clark can practice, she won’t play. Indiana returns to action Friday night when Minnesota comes to town.
NCAAFB – All eyes on top-rated recruit Bryce Underwood at QB for No. 14 Michigan
Bryce Underwood is ready to have all eyes on him this season, playing quarterback for No. 14 Michigan hailed as the top-rated recruit in the country. He’s also ready to take some hits. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Underwood told two reporters earlier this summer that he has put on 15 pounds of muscle to get bigger, stronger and quicker. Underwood says the weight gain has made him more explosive and faster. The Wolverines trail four Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25, but Underwood said people should expect a lot from them on both sides of the ball.

NCAAFB – CFP adding weight to games vs. strong opponents, less for beating weak foes
The College Football Playoff selection committee announced it will place more emphasis on strength of schedule when determining the 12-team field. The schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents. An additional metric known as record strength has been added to the analysis to go beyond a team’s schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. The metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. There will be minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent and greater penalty for losing to one.

NCAA – House Dems ask about plans to protect women as ways to pay college athletes
Ten Democratic U.S. House members have asked the NCAA about its plans to protect female athletes’ interests. They are concerned that most NIL and revenue-sharing payments go to male athletes. In a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker, the lawmakers noted that Title IX guidance on NIL payments was rescinded during President Donald Trump’s administration. They want answers to questions about equitable payment distribution and support for women’s sports. The NCAA did not directly address these questions but urged support for the “SCORE Act,” which aims to protect athletes’ rights. The NCAA says its investment in women’s sports has increased recently.

Golf – Scottie Scheffler doesn’t like comparisons to Tiger Woods. But Tiger inspired him
Scottie Scheffler doesn’t like the comparisons to Tiger Woods. He believes Woods stands alone in golf for inspiring so many players. Scheffler was one of them. On the eve of the Tour Championship, he tells about the only time he played with Woods. They were 11 shots behind going into the final round of the 2020 Masters and neither had a chance to win. Scheffler says Woods brought great intensity to the first hole. He says it taught him to pour everything into every shot and every round. Scheffler says that’s what helped him reach No. 1 in golf.
