Point O’ Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Township is looking for some volunteers to help out with the first ever Jim DeLapa Collegiate, a premier collegiate golf event planned for the course next month.

Point O’ Woods General Manager Matt Flaherty tells us they’ll have the best college-level golfers from around the country on hand for the tournament, to be held September 27 through September 29. The club is putting it together to recreate some of the excitement the Western Amateur would always bring when Point O’ Woods hosted it from 1968 to 2008.

This was Point ‘O Woods looking to kind of honor traditions of hosting a lead amateur golf, but instead of having an outside party come in and be the host of it, we’re looking to create our own men’s division one college event that we will be the home of,” Flaherty said.

Flaherty says the first year of the Jim DeLapa Collegiate is starting off a bit small, but they’re still going to need about 130 volunteers to stage the event. The volunteers will walk with players and plug in scores at each hole, serve as hole spotters, and help out with registrations and concessions. Flaherty says the help would be most appreciated.

This community loves golf. They love to give back and volunteer. So we wanted to give them an opportunity to get involved with this event as well.”

Considering the thousands of people who volunteered for the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores each time it was held there, there ought to be plenty interested in the Jim DeLapa Collegiate.

Flaherty says volunteering will be totally free, and expert-level knowledge of golf isn’t needed. Organizers will work to ensure each volunteer is assigned a task appropriate for them.
