The 2025 High School Football Season begins this week and this week News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM takes a look at the area conferences for a preview of the upcoming season.
2025 High School Football Preview – 8-Man Football
The Southwest Michigan 8-man conference is once again defined by proven state powers and programs in different stages of growth. Martin enters 2025 with championship pedigree, having won state titles in 2022 and 2023, and remains one of the most complete teams in the state with its experienced roster. Gobles returns a senior-heavy lineup with playmakers on both sides of the ball, looking to challenge for postseason success if consistency holds. Marcellus continues to make strides as a program, but depth will be a key factor in how far the Wildcats can push. Bridgman, despite its enrollment making the Bees ineligible for postseason play, remains one of the most dangerous teams on the schedule and a measuring stick for the rest of the league.
Several teams are still building and eager to prove themselves. The Twin City Sharks, a cooperative squad of Our Lady of the Lake, Michigan Lutheran, Countryside Academy, and Grace Christian, continue to grow their identity with a balanced Air Raid attack and home games hosted at Lakeshore’s Kohn Sports Complex. Bangor is also working toward stability under new leadership, bringing back experience while still looking to strengthen its depth. Eau Claire, though small in numbers and very young, has committed to retooling both its offense and defense to maximize athleticism. Fennville, behind 11 seniors, is confident after finishing last season with three straight wins over Tekonsha, Onaway, and Bangor, and sees itself as a dark horse.
The Red Arrow Raiders, a co-op of New Buffalo and River Valley, bring an interesting wrinkle to the league. With only a handful of returning starters, the Raiders will lean on a physical offensive line and a group of promising underclassmen stepping into key roles. While still in the process of building depth, the program has grown from a competitive JV group last year and expects that energy to carry over into varsity play. With Martin, Gobles, and Bridgman at the top, Sacred Heart Academy entering as a new member after a 9-1 season in 2024, and challengers like Fennville and Red Arrow hoping to rise, the 2025 season promises to be one of the deepest and most competitive yet for 8-man football in Southwest Michigan.
This season also brings a new alignment with the league, it splits up into the 8-man teams that are eligible to make the 8-man playoffs, which are the Red Division and the White Division consists of the teams that are not eligible to make the playoffs. Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian also will not field a team this year for a second straight season.

The Bangor Vikings enter their fourth season of 8-player football with a renewed sense of direction and purpose under first-year head coach Ryan Casey. After years of groundwork in the 8-man ranks, the program is focused on taking the next step forward—on and off the field.
Coach Casey, who will also serve as offensive and defensive coordinator, is bringing energy and structure to the Vikings, who return a solid core of senior leaders. Four starters return on each side of the ball, including experienced quarterback Jorge Dominguez (Sr.), who will guide the team’s Spread Wing offense. The backfield duo of Wyatt Schneider (Sr.) and Brendan Jackson (Sr.) brings toughness and speed, while Deondra Hankins (Sr.) gives Bangor a vertical playmaker at receiver.
Defensively, Bangor’s strength lies in its senior core. Dominguez will lead from the linebacker position, flanked by Schneider, who can play both linebacker and in the secondary. Terrance Payne (Sr.) brings size and power up front, while Landen Valentine (Jr.) helps lock down the secondary from his defensive back position.
Schneider will also play a key role on special teams as a primary returner.
Though still building depth with just 18 players on the varsity roster, Coach Casey is excited about the progress the group has made through offseason work. “Our kids have been focused. We’ve gotten stronger, faster, and more connected,” he said. “This is a group that’s determined to compete and raise the standard here at Bangor.”
With eight seniors and growing momentum, the Vikings are hoping 2025 is the season they begin to see results. While Casey is still getting to know the landscape of his team’s conference, he’s looking forward to competing against strong programs and establishing Bangor as a team to watch in the 8-player division.
“We’re not focused on who’s the favorite right now,” Casey said. “We’re focused on ourselves—building a team that fights, competes, and takes pride in representing Bangor.”
Bloomingdale Cardinals
2024 Record: Did not field a team in 2024
Head Coach: Jason Hayes (9th season, 1-18)

Bloomingdale football is taking another step forward in rebuilding its program this fall, returning to the varsity level after sitting out last season. Head coach Jason Hayes, entering his ninth year at the helm, leads a group that’s small in numbers but eager to compete. Hayes has a 1-15 record at Bloomingdale, but says the program is focused on steady growth and keeping football alive in the community.
The Cardinals will suit up just 12 players, with only one senior on the roster, but there is optimism thanks to some key returning starters. Senior Troy Zuck will be a leader on both sides of the ball as a running back and free safety, while junior Terrance Payne adds size and versatility at tight end and linebacker. Hayes also points to the importance of continued development from the team’s underclassmen, who will get valuable playing time right away.
Offensively, Bloomingdale will line up in the 8-Man T under offensive coordinator Lance Flynn, with Hayes handling the defense in a 2-3 base alignment. The Cardinals bring back three starters on each side of the ball, which provides some continuity despite the limited roster. Special teams remain a work in progress, as specialists have not yet been finalized.
For 2024, Hayes is focused less on wins and losses and more on progress. “We’re looking forward to another strong season of growth,” he said. “We hope to build off the momentum we’ve established over the last couple of years and continue to grow football in our community.” In the Southwest Michigan 8-Man League, Hayes points to Bloomingdale and Marcellus as teams to watch.
Bridgman Bees
2024 Record: 5-4 (1-1 SWMI 8-Man League- White)
Head Coach: Aaron Locke (10th season, 55-26)
2025 Schedule
08/28 – at Martin – 7:00 p.m.
09/05 – at Twin City – 7:00 p.m.
09/12 – at Grandville Calvin Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/19 – Fennville – 7:00 p.m.
09/26 – Bloomingdale – 7:00 p.m.

10/10 – Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian – 7:00 p.m.
10/17 – at Red Arrow – 7:00 p.m.
10/24 – at Brown City – 4:00 p.m.
The Bridgman Bees enter the 2025 football season once again carrying the label of one of Michigan’s best 8-man programs — but also knowing they won’t be eligible for the playoffs due to their enrollment numbers. It’s a familiar situation for head coach Aaron Locke, who enters his 10th season leading the program with a 55–26 record. Despite a small roster of just 14 varsity players, the Bees have built a tradition of contending with the top teams in the state year after year. This year’s team will be anchored by a senior-heavy group of nine players who bring leadership, size, and toughness to both sides of the ball.
Offensively, Bridgman will continue to operate out of its spread attack but with a stronger commitment to the running game thanks to increased size on the offensive line. Junior quarterback Ty Adams (6’3, 190) will be at the controls, bringing a big frame and a steady arm to the huddle. He’ll be supported by senior center Gunnar Klint (6’1, 295), a powerful presence up front, and senior guard Quinn Noll (5’11, 190), who adds mobility to the line. Senior wideout Ethan Stine (5’11, 160) will be a versatile weapon in the passing game and also handles kicking duties. Senior running back Brock Johnson (5’7, 150) brings quickness and agility to a backfield that will be leaned on heavily to control the tempo of games.
Defensively, the Bees bring back four starters and are determined to make improvements after facing several high-powered offenses last year. Senior defensive tackle Alan Estebes (5’9, 175) and senior defensive tackle Brody Roberts (5’10, 180) will look to control the interior, while senior middle linebacker Lincoln Smith (5’9, 170) and senior outside linebacker Samuel Locke (6’0, 175) will lead a veteran front. In the secondary, senior cornerback Jesse Kelly (5’11, 180) will be tasked with matching up against opponents’ top receivers and providing leadership on the back end.
While the postseason remains out of reach due to MHSAA rules, Bridgman’s schedule offers no shortage of motivation. The Bees will face perennial powers Martin and Northpointe Christian — both viewed as top contenders in 2025 — along with other physical conference opponents. For Locke and his team, the mission is clear: win every Friday night, measure themselves against the state’s best, and keep the Bridgman tradition of excellence alive regardless of playoff eligibility.
Eau Claire Beavers
2024 Record: 3-6 (0-3 SWMI 8-Man League-Red)
Head Coach: Earl Koch (5th season, 13-23)
2025 Schedule
08/28 – at Bloomingdale – 7:00 p.m.
09/05 – Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
09/12 – at Muskegon Heights – 7:00 p.m.
09/19 – Lawrence – 7:00 p.m.
09/26 – Martin – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – at Grand Rapids Sacred Heart – 1:00 p.m.
10/10 – Wyoming Tri-Unity – 7:00 p.m.
10/17 – at Marcellus – 7:00 p.m.
10/24 – at Red Arrow – 7:00 p.m.
The Eau Claire Beavers are set to begin the 2025 8-player football season with a youthful, hungry roster looking to build on lessons learned from last year’s 3–6 campaign, which included a forfeit victory over Tri-Unity Christian. Head coach Earl Koch, now entering his fifth season leading the program (13–22 record), is introducing both a new offense and defensive scheme designed to better fit his players’ skill sets. With only two returning starters on offense and three on defense, the Beavers will be counting on quick development from a large group of underclassmen to compete in a stacked league.
The offensive unit will be guided by senior quarterback Aidyn Dohm (5’10, 165), who will look to distribute the ball to a diverse group of playmakers. Senior running backs Kayden Lash (6’0, 150) and DaQuarius Travis (5’10, 145) bring speed and agility to the backfield, while senior end Brady Williams (6’1, 175) adds size and a reliable target in the passing game. The Beavers’ young backfield depth includes sophomore Melvin Davis (5’7, 140) and sophomore Christian Branch (5’10, 140), both of whom can contribute as runners and receivers. In the trenches, junior Mickael Clark (5’10, 335) and sophomore center Kay’Den Gil (5’7, 235) will anchor an offensive line that must replace three starters from last year, including standout Thai Wittman, now playing at Waldorf University in Iowa.
Defensively, Eau Claire will rely heavily on senior leaders Lash, Dohm, and Travis to set the tone. Sophomore linebacker J’Son Hamilton (5’7, 165) and sophomore defensive lineman Brayan Santiago (6’1, 265) will be key in stopping the run, while Davis, Branch, and sophomore Jamaal Roseburgh (5’10, 155) provide athleticism in the secondary. The Beavers’ defensive philosophy in the 2-3-3 alignment will be built around quick pursuit and open-field tackling, an essential in the wide-open 8-man game.
Special teams should be a strength with Williams handling kicking and punting duties, Davis offering versatility as both a kicker/punter and return man, and Travis providing an explosive threat on returns.
The schedule will be a challenge, as Eau Claire’s conference features perennial powers Martin and Gobles, both capable of competing for state championships — as well as a strong Marcellus squad. Red Arrow Raiders and an improved Muskegon Heights will also present tough matchups. Adding to the mix is conference newcomer Grand Rapids Sacred Heart, fresh off a 9-1 season.
For the Beavers, success will come down to how quickly their young roster can adapt to varsity football’s speed and physicality. If the new systems click and the offensive line finds its footing early, Eau Claire has the potential to surprise some opponents and be competitive in most games this fall.
Fennville Blackhawks
2024 Record: 3-6 (0-1 SWMI 8-Man League-Blue)
Head Coach: Wendell Hughes (3rd season, 3-14)
2025 Schedule
08/28 – Lawrence – 7:00 p.m.
09/04 – at Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/12 – Bloomingdale – 7:00 p.m.
09/19 – at Bridgman – 7:00 p.m.
09/26 – Red Arrow – 7:00 p.m.
10/03 – at Twin City
10/10 – Grandville Calvin Christian – 7:00 p.m.
10/17 – Bangor – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – at Onaway – TBA
The Fennville Blackhawks enter the 2025 season with momentum on their side, coming off a strong finish last fall that saw them win three of their last 5 games, but included straight wins over Tekonsha, Onaway, and Bangor. Those victories gave the program a needed confidence boost and showed the progress being made under third-year head coach Wendell Hughes Sr. Now, with an experienced group that features 11 seniors—including six who have been in the program since Hughes’ arrival—the Blackhawks are setting their sights on taking another step forward in the competitive 8-man landscape.
The Blackhawks will once again run their Flexbone attack, a system designed to maximize ball control and create opportunities through deception and disciplined execution. Senior quarterback Carter Thompson (6’0″, 175) will direct the offense, bringing experience and leadership under center. Power in the run game comes from senior fullback Trinity Solis (5’9″, 185), while the passing game will look to exploit mismatches with senior wideout Ely Schut (6’3″, 180), a big target who can also stretch the field. Senior lineman Zach Onken (6’4″, 250) provides size and strength up front to anchor the offensive line.
Defensively, Fennville will operate out of a 3-2 alignment, focusing on gap control and pursuit. Senior defensive ends Jayden Sneller (5’9″, 160) and Ethan Rosencrans (5’10”) bring experience on the edge, while senior linebacker Isiah Souders-Beltran will be counted on to lead the unit in the middle. Senior safety Ashton Halcomb (5’8″) adds stability in the secondary, helping to prevent big plays and direct the defense. The group’s mix of returning experience and physicality should help the Blackhawks stay competitive in key matchups.
Ely Schut will handle both kicking and punting duties, providing consistency in the kicking game. Several players are expected to rotate in as return specialists, giving Fennville options to find the right spark in the return game.
With a roster loaded with upperclassmen and a core group that has been through the grind together, Fennville is primed for a strong season. The experience gained from last year’s late surge could pay big dividends, especially in close games. Coach Hughes knows the road won’t be easy, with NorthPointe Christian and Bridgman tabbed as conference favorites, but the Blackhawks have the pieces to compete and make noise in 2025.

After a strong debut in 8-player football with a 15-3 record over the past two years, Grand Rapids Sacred Heart Academy takes its next big step in 2025 as a new member of the Southwest Michigan 8-Man Football Conference—a league that head coach Joe Hyland calls “one of the two best 8-man conferences in Michigan.”
The Falcons will lean on experience and toughness to make an immediate impact in a rugged conference slate that features perennial powers like Martin, Gobles, and Marcellus. Sacred Heart returns six starters on each side of the ball and features a veteran roster with 11 seniors ready to meet the challenge.
Leading the charge offensively is junior quarterback William Hyland (5’11”, 170), who returns under center with a firm grasp of the Irish’s run-heavy attack. He’ll be joined in the backfield by senior running back Andy Chapin (6’0″, 185), a physical runner with speed and versatility. Senior Eric Seif (5’9″, 160) adds a threat at wideout and in the return game, while seniors Peter Alfaro (6’0″, 180), Patrick Fickell (6’1″, 215), and Isaac Bir (5’11”, 185) anchor a physical offensive line.
Defensively, the Falcons are built around a deep linebacker corps. Senior Rob Blouw (6’2″, 200) and junior Andrew Detmers (6’1″, 175) lead the group, supported by juniors Will Hatley (5’9″, 160) and Jack Ugolini (6’2″, 165) in the secondary. The defense is designed to swarm and adapt—essential in a league with versatile offenses.
Special teams should be a strength, with multiple capable kickers and returners. Will Hyland, Eric Seif, Andrew Detmers, and Andy Chapin all contribute to the kicking and return units, giving Sacred Heart flexibility and explosiveness.
Coach Hyland knows the conference grind will be no easy task. “We’re going to be playing teams that are bigger than us almost every week,” he said. “But that’s what excites us. It’s going to test us in every way.”
With a mature, talented core and the motivation to prove themselves in one of the state’s toughest 8-player leagues, Grand Rapids Sacred Heart enters the 2025 season with quiet confidence and a no-excuses mindset. A “one-week-at-a-time” approach will guide the Irish as they push for respect and postseason contention in their new league home.

With a proven system, a core of veteran leaders, and one of the most consistent small-school programs in the region, Gobles enters the 2025 8-player football season with high expectations and a clear vision. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Greg Eichler, the Tigers are eyeing a deep postseason run with a seasoned group of seniors and standout special teams play.
At the heart of the team’s identity is its Single Wing offense, built on toughness and execution. Senior Nathan Ray (RB/LB) headlines both sides of the ball after an exceptional 2024 campaign, racking up 456 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on just 42 carries. On defense, he was a relentless force with 64 tackles, 17 for loss, 3.5 sacks, and an interception.
Fellow senior Steven Juarez (RB/LB/DB) adds speed and versatility to the backfield, contributing over 320 rushing yards and tallying 50 tackles on defense. Another senior, Aiden Beam (RB/DB), returns as an All-State specialist and is one of the most impactful players in southwest Michigan. Beam boomed 70 kickoffs for 2,821 yards and 5 touchbacks, went 14-of-15 on PATs, and added 3 interceptions and a receiving touchdown.
Up front, the offensive line is anchored by seniors Tucker Greffe (36 pancake blocks) and AJ Salinas, who brings physicality and athleticism to both lines. Salinas also recorded 64 tackles and 16 tackles for loss last year. Another key senior, Devin Doorlag, is coming off a successful wrestling season and is poised for a breakout year in the backfield and linebacker unit.
Tight end Brett Ivester, a senior, had a strong offseason and will be a mismatch threat in the passing game while reinforcing the edge of the line. Young talent like Hunter Piper (Jr., RB/LB) and Thomas Burrell (So., TE/DL) are expected to step up and add depth and energy to both sides of the ball.
Coach Eichler emphasized that success in 2025 will come down to internal discipline:
“We know that our main obstacle has been ourselves, so we must continue to focus on our processes and keep getting better every day. It’s about peaking at the right time and playing quality football when it counts the most.”
Though the conference is filled with competitive programs, Gobles enters the year confident in its veteran core, physical brand of football, and the belief that this senior class can lead them to a big season in the Southwest Michigan 8-Man Conference.

10/17 – Martin – 7:00 p.m.
10/24 – at Bloomingdale – 7:00 p.m.
It’s welcome back to football for the Lawrence Tigers. Lawrence did not field a varsity team last season, so their JV team from 2024 is now the varsity team for 2025.
New head coach Steve Raklovits may not have players with varsity experience, but he has between 16-18 players out for this season and that includes 5 seniors who have stuck through the program’s recent struggles.
Lawrence will run from a power wing formation on offense with Mike Sinkler calling the plays. He lists as his key starters junior center, Luke Sinkler (5’9, 185), with senior Karter Everhart (6’0, 175) as RB/QB. With Sophomore Christian Barboza (5’10, 165) also at running back.
The Tigers will either use a 3 or 4 man front on defense, with Raklovits as the coordinator. Sinkler will play on defense as well at linebacker, and at defensive ends, senior Alex Gardner (6’4, 185) and junior Gabe Doorlag (6’3, 180).
Junior Huver Hernandez (5’8, 150) is listed as the kicker on special teams.
Raklovits describes his team as “Very hungry and committed group of a good number of players ready to get into action.” He continues, “Team goal is to be competitive with ball control offense and a lot of position sharing responsibilities.”
As for the SW Michigan 8-man league. “Marcellus should do well based on previous years and number of players.”
The Tigers first game is at Fennville on Thursday, August 28.
Marcellus Wildcats
2024 Record: 7-3 (4-0 SWMI 8-Man League-Red)
Head Coach: Nathan Davies (6th season, 25-20)
2024 Schedule
08/28 – Morenci – 7:00 p.m.
09/05 – at Martin – 7:00 p.m.
09/12 – Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
09/19 – Grand Rapids Sacred Heart – 7:00 p.m.
09/26 – Muskegon Heights Academy – 7:00 p.m.
10/03 – Wyoming Tri-Unity
10/10 – Lawrence – 7:00 p.m.
10/17 – Eau Claire – 7:00 p.m.
10/24 – Bangor – 7:00 p.m.
The Marcellus Wildcats enter the 2025 season with a determined mindset under the leadership of eighth-year head coach Nathan Davies. While the program’s numbers remain small with just 16 players on varsity, the group features a mix of experienced returners and promising underclassmen eager to make their mark. The Wildcats bring back five starters on offense and four on defense from last year’s squad, giving them a foundation to build upon in the always-competitive Southwest Michigan 8-Man Football League. With four seniors on the roster, leadership and health will be critical factors in determining how far this team can go. Take into account Marcellus only has one road game this season.
Offensively, junior quarterback Cale Hackenberg will direct a multiple-look attack that aims to balance the run and pass. Hackenberg will have several reliable weapons around him, including junior running back Martelle Enright, senior Peyton Street in the backfield, and junior wideout Abram Coffey, who will also handle kicking and punting duties. The offensive line will be anchored by junior guards Brock Woodhouse and Zade Tyszka, tasked with protecting Hackenberg and opening lanes for the running game. The team’s ability to control the line of scrimmage will be key to sustaining drives and keeping pressure off the defense.
On the defensive side, Marcellus will rely on an aggressive, multiple-front scheme to disrupt opposing offenses. Juniors Leighton Osborne and Blake McWilliams will lead the linebacker corps, bringing toughness and high motor play, while senior Marvin Jones provides size and strength along the defensive line. Hackenberg will anchor the secondary from the safety position, and junior Matt Lehew adds depth and coverage ability at defensive back. With a smaller roster, the Wildcats will need their two-way players to stay fresh and avoid injuries to remain competitive deep into the season.
In a division that features perennial powerhouse Martin as the favorite, Marcellus understands the challenge ahead. However, the Wildcats believe that with discipline, health, and contributions from younger players, they have the potential to surprise opponents. If the roster can stay intact through the grind of the season, the Wildcats could position themselves for a playoff push and prove that their resilience and hard work can close the gap on the league’s best.
Martin Clippers

The Martin Clippers are not just another 8‑player football team — they’re a dynasty in the making. Coach Brad Blauvelt, entering his 8th season at Martin, has built a program of sustained excellence. After back‑to‑back Division 1 state championships in 2022 and 2023.
Experience remains the backbone of this team. With 11 seniors, the Clippers know what it takes to win big games and aim to learn from last year’s narrow playoff loss to archrival Mendon — a moment still fresh in the minds of returners.
Martin runs a physical Power Read offense with a veteran core returning. Senior Haylen Buell takes over at quarterback and linebacker — a dynamic athlete, all‑state wrestler, and standout linebacker who brings grit, athleticism, and leadership. He’ll be supported by junior running back Seth Toris and speed merchants Bryer Watson (slot/CB) and Weson Elkins, the team’s fastest player.
Up front, a battle‑tested offensive line anchors the offense: James Gruber returns after three years as a starter, flanked by senior Ben Romero (center and kicker), and bolstered by transfer Peyton Schuring‑Harris, a powerful 6′2″, 280‑lb lineman who has impressed this offseason.
Defensively, the Clippers feature a stingy 2‑3 scheme loaded with experience. Senior stalwarts include Isaac Suk (MLB), Ward Cheney (LB), and two‑way contributors Buell, Watson, Gruber, and Elkins, all of whom return from last year’s championship squads. Their senior leadership and experience in high-pressure playoff games provide Martin with an edge on that side of the ball.
Special teams are anchored by Ben Romero as kicker, with Elkins and Watson handling returns. Depth remains tight with only 15 varsity players, which places emphasis on staying healthy and game‑ready. However, several promising freshmen could emerge late in the season to bolster the rotation.
Coach Blauvelt isn’t focused on conference standings. “We could care less about the conference; our goal is the playoffs — and then to make a run,” he says. Still, Marcellus and Gobles are expected to present challenges, but Martin believes its experience and depth make them the team to beat.
With a decorated recent history, returners in nearly every key spot, and a roster loaded with senior leadership, the Martin Clippers are poised for a third straight state title. Barring injuries and with the pace of blossoming freshmen, Martin may be playing meaningful football well into November — where state championship rings await.

The Red Arrow Raiders, the now 5th year cooperative program between New Buffalo and River Valley, are preparing for another season in the ever-tough world of 8-player football. After posting limited results in recent years, the Raiders are hoping that an infusion of young talent and a deeper roster can help turn the tide in 2025.
Head coach Matt Johnson returns for his 13th season, 5 with Red Arrow and the previous 8 with New Buffalo, where he has compiled a 39-65 record. Johnson also oversees both the offensive and defensive schemes, giving him direct influence on every phase of the game. Offensively, the Raiders will spread the field, relying on quickness and versatility to create opportunities. Sophomore quarterback Colten Lijewski (5’11”) takes over under center, bringing youthful energy and upside. He’ll have two dependable receiving targets in senior Cooper Lynch (6’2”) and junior Drew Bowen (5’10”), while senior lineman Johnny Harrison (5’8”) provides stability in the trenches.
Defensively, the Raiders are shifting their focus to physicality and toughness, working out of a 2-3 alignment. Senior leaders Lucas Forker (6’4”) and Nicholas Wolfe (5’11”) anchor the defensive line, while junior Keith Foust (5’11”) and sophomore Brody Nikkel (5’10”) provide energy at linebacker. The group may be light on returning starters—only two—but Johnson is confident this unit can develop into a strength, especially with a stronger commitment to hitting and discipline.
Special teams could provide a spark as well, with Travis James slated to handle return duties, giving the Raiders a chance to flip field position with his speed.
With only three returning starters on offense and two on defense, this is a group short on varsity experience but long on opportunity. Johnson says he’s “cautiously optimistic,” noting that last year’s JV squad was competitive, and many of those players are now expected to take on key roles. The roster of 18 players, including six seniors, gives the Raiders more depth than in some past seasons, particularly along the offensive line—a major point of emphasis.
The Raiders understand the challenge ahead in a conference featuring perennial powers Gobles and Martin, both of whom enter 2025 as favorites. But with a more physical defense, improved depth, and a young quarterback to build around, Red Arrow is aiming to show growth each week and close the gap in one of Michigan’s toughest 8-man divisions.
Again this season, Red Arrow will be playing home games at both River Valley at New Buffalo

The Twin City Sharks enter the 2025 season looking to continue their steady climb in the world of 8-player football. Led by sixth-year head coach Pete Murphy, the Sharks represent a unique co-op between Our Lady of the Lake, Michigan Lutheran, Countryside Academy, and Watervliet Grace Christian Schools—a partnership that has built a tight-knit roster with players from across the region. With 26 players on the varsity squad, including five seniors, this year’s group blends experienced leaders with developing talent eager to prove itself in the competitive 8-player landscape.
Offensively, Murphy’s squad will once again run an Air Raid attack designed to spread the field and get multiple players involved. Junior quarterback Ethan Eggert will direct the offense, distributing the ball to a balanced group of weapons that includes senior slot back Anthony Ealey, junior tight end Connor Olsen, and junior running back Evan Watts. Up front, senior guard Cam Rand anchors the offensive line, giving Eggert time to find his targets and helping open running lanes to keep defenses honest.
On the defensive side, the Sharks return six starters, giving them a foundation of experience to build upon. Olsen, Watts, and senior linebacker Anders Johnson will be key in stopping the run and flying to the ball, while Rand provides size and strength along the defensive front. In the secondary, Ealey’s athleticism will be critical in limiting big plays from opposing pass-heavy offenses.
While the Sharks know they will be tested against perennial powers like Martin, Mendon, Bridgman, and Northpointe Christian, Murphy believes this team has the balance, chemistry, and work ethic to compete with anyone on their schedule. The message is clear: it’s time to consistently beat the teams they can beat, not just the ones they’re expected to beat.
With strong relationships being built across four schools, improved depth, and a commitment to playing fast, physical, and balanced football, the Twin City Sharks are ready to take another step forward in 2025—and to prove they can swim with the best in the 8-player game.
The Sharks open the 2025 season against Red Arrow on Thursday, August 28. Home games this fall will again be played at the Lakeshore Rocket Football Field at the Kohn Sports Complex in Stevensville, located just south of Lakeshore High School. With a strong co-op culture, improved depth, and a commitment to playing fast, physical, and balanced football, the Twin City Sharks are ready to take another step forward in 2025—and to prove they can swim with the best in the 8-player game.
You can catch Coach Murphy every Saturday on The Coaches on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM.
