The South Haven City Council is keeping a close eye on housing developments planned around the community.

At its regular meeting Monday, City Manager Kate Hosier presented to council a report drafted by Assistant City Manager Michael Landis on various housing activities now underway. Many of the developments are still in the planning stage, including the long-stalled effort to bring something new to the Overton site and the ongoing Center Street project, which will be between Quaker and Phoenix Streets. That just got a PUD extension from the city while developers seek state support.

Council member Joe Reeser said with so many complex projects going on, maybe the city could find a point person.

We have all these moving parts. How can you, Kate, put together a plan for a person that can put all of this together, that has the experience, that has the know-how to do it?”

Hosier said this is a daunting but important task.

So myself and Michael are pretty much the ones who spearhead this because this is a council priority. Quite frankly, this is what I should be spending my time mostly on, not only managing a staff of up to 150 people, but this is a council priority and this is a big one.”

Hosier said the Trailside II team is making consistent progress on its plans to develop 56 townhomes along Elkenburg Street, between Indiana Avenue and Everett Parkway. Ten permitted units are under construction while an additional four units are in the process of getting permitted.

Hosier also said Habitat for Humanity has shown an interest in developing homes in South Haven. It’s just a matter of finding property.

It was noted there is plenty of housing action also underway in South Haven Township, which has larger parcels to work with.
