The United Way of Southwest Michigan is now taking registrations for its annual Rake a Difference event, to be held November 13 across Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.

The United Way’s Debbie Ramirez tells us Rake a Difference is when hundreds of volunteers throughout the three counties rake leaves and clear gutters at the homes of seniors for a day. The organization looks to serve around 350 seniors each year, and Ramirez says some appreciate the help so much, they tear up.

They take great pride in taking care of their property and being able to maintain that independence on their own, of living in the house on their own, and something as simple as having volunteers come to rake your leaves helps them maintain that independence,” Ramirez said.

Last year, about 340 seniors were served, but some had to be turned down because the United Way needed more volunteers. So this year, it’s seeking as many as 1,600 of them.

Ramirez says the teams that sign up determine what they’ll be doing.

The teams can go out and work all day. They can work half day. It really depends on what they’re able to do. They tell us how long they want to work. They tell us where they want to work.”

To take part, no prior experience is needed and all necessary supplies — including rakes, gloves, and leaf bags — will be provided. You can sign up now at RakeADifference.com. That’s also where interested seniors looking for a little help can go. They can also call the United Way of Southwest Michigan.

Registrations will be taken through October 17.
