A South Haven police officer has been honored with a Lifesaving Award for his quick actions to save a man’s life this summer.

The South Haven City Council was told Tuesday Officer Cooper Carns was called to a one-vehicle crash on M-140 near the Village Express Carwash on July 31. He arrived to find a 74-year-old man unresponsive.

He quickly assessed the driver and determined he did not have a pulse. He and a bystander were able to get the male out of the truck and laid him on the ground. Officer Carnes immediately began performing CPR on the male victim.”

South Haven Area Emergency Services then arrived at the scene and Director Brandon Hinz commended Carns for his actions to keep the man alive.

Officer Carns’, swift evaluation and immediate response undoubtedly played a critical role in the positive outcome of this patient.”

Officer Carns has been with the South Haven Police Department since 2022.

City council members applauded Carns for his actions during the meeting.
