NFL – Bears coach says coming days will determine how heavily team leans on Williams
Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson says the next few days will determine how heavily the team leans on quarterback Caleb Williams in the opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. The Bears are counting on Williams to develop into a franchise quarterback and stabilize a position that has been a sore spot for a big part of the founding NFL franchise’s history. He showed some promise as a rookie after being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick, throwing for 3,541 yards and just six interceptions, though it was hardly an easy season for the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner. Williams was sacked a league-worst and franchise-record 68 times. Chicago finished last in the NFC North at 5-12.

NFL – Packers have early chance to show they’ve fixed their issues against NFC North
Green Bay has a chance to fix its recent divisional woes right from the start of the season. The key for the Packers is a faster start. Green Bay went 1-5 against NFC North opponents in 2024 for its worst divisional record in nearly two decades. The Packers open their season Sunday by hosting the two-time defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions. The Packers were outscored 99-40 in the first half of their six divisional games. They trailed at halftime in all of them. They also didn’t win the turnover margin in any of their six divisional games.

NBA – NBA to investigate report that Clippers broke cap rules with Leonard deal
The NBA says it will investigate if a $28 million endorsement contract between Kawhi Leonard and a California-based sustainability services company allowed the Los Angeles Clippers to circumvent league salary cap rules, following a report by journalist Pablo Torre. The probe will focus on ties between Leonard, the Clippers and a company called Aspiration Fund Adviser, LLC, which filed for bankruptcy this year. It listed several creditors at that time, among them the Clippers (who were owed about $30 million) and a company called KL2 Aspire LLC that was owed $7 million. Leonard is listed as the manager of that company in California filings.

NBA – NBA moving closer to a US vs. International format for the All-Star Game
The NBA is close to finalizing another new format for this season’s All-Star Game that would include two eight-man teams from the U.S. and one eight-man team composed of international players squaring off in a round-robin tournament. A person with knowledge of the plan spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the format has not been finalized. The person says the league’s competition committee has reviewed details of the plan and reacted positively to the concept. The league is about 70% American players and about 30% international.

Tennis – Amanda Anisimova upsets Iga Swiatek at the U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Amanda Anisimova has upset Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open quarterfinals less than two months after losing to the six-time Grand Slam champion in the Wimbledon final by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The victory Wednesday allowed the No. 8-seeded Anisimova to reach her third major semifinal and first at Flushing Meadows. Anisimova is a 24-year-old who was born in New Jersey and grew up in Florida. The powerful strokes and poise Anisimova displayed in Arthur Ashe Stadium against No. 2 Swiatek — the 2022 U.S. Open champion — were such a striking contrast to what happened at the All England Club’s Centre Court on July 12.

Tennis – Sinner takes his US Open title defense into the semifinals by beating Musetti
Jannik Sinner returned to the U.S. Open semifinals by beating No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first all-Italian matchup in a men’s major quarterfinal. The No. 1 seed continued what’s been an easy title defense and on Friday will face No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat No. 8 Alex de Minaur 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4) earlier Wednesday. Sinner is into his fifth straight Grand Slam semifinal and with a win Friday would reach the finals of all four majors this year. He has won 26 consecutive matches in majors on hard courts. That includes the past two Australian Open titles along with his triumph in New York a year ago.
