A special event will be held next week in downtown St. Joseph to mark Railroad Safety Week.

Michigan Operation Lifesaver says the theme this year is “See Tracks? Think Train Week,” reminding everyone to be mindful when they are near railroad tracks. The campaign will kick off below the bluff in St. Joseph at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

St. Joseph Mayor Brook Thomas said at this week’s city commission meeting she’ll be there.

Bright and early, Rail Safety Week gets kicked off on Monday at 7:30 a.m., I believe it is,” Thomas said. “Down at the Amtrak station. So if you’re passionate about that and want to come celebrate Rail Safety Week, come down and join us.”

Michigan Operation Lifesaver says a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours in the United States. The group is planning activities all week to highlight the danger and to share lifesaving messages.

The week will begin with two events — the one in St. Joseph and one in Ann Arbor.
