Tigers 12, Yankees 2 – Tigers score 9 runs in 7th inning to trounce wild Yankees 12-2
Parker Meadows hit a go-ahead single to spark a nine-run seventh inning and Kerry Carpenter added a two-run triple as the Detroit Tigers took advantage of wild relievers Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. in a 12-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Detroit sent 14 batters to the plate in the seventh and the first nine reached against Cruz and Leiter, who combined to allow four walks, four hits and a hit batsman. Meadows hit a tying two-run homer in the fifth off starter Will Warren and singled after Cruz opened the seventh by allowing a double to Riley Greene and issuing two walks. Meadows scored Detroit’s fourth run of the inning when Colt Keith was hit by a pitch.

Rays 5, White Sox 4 – Tristan Gray hits a tiebreaking homer to send the Rays past the White Sox 5-4
Tristan Gray, Josh Lowe and Richie Palacios homered to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Gray hit a tiebreaking solo drive off Tyler Alexander in the seventh inning. It was Gray’s third homer in 17 games since he was acquired in a July 26 trade with the White Sox for cash. Kevin Kelly got one out for the win, and Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 25th save. Tampa Bay returned to .500 with its 11th win in 16 games. Kyle Teel homered for the last-place White Sox, who had won seven of eight.

Cubs 6, Braves 1 – Cubs beat Braves 6-1 behind Cade Horton’s strong outing
Rookie Cade Horton threw 6 1/3 strong innings, Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs pulled away from the Atlanta Braves late for a 6-1 win Tuesday night. Horton allowed one run on four hits with no walks. He pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season. Andrew Kittredge recorded the final two outs in the seventh, and Caleb Thielbar and Ben Brown each pitched a scoreless inning. Ronald Acuña Jr. scored the lone run for the Braves off an RBI single from Jurickson Profar. Braves starter Spencer Strider gave up two runs on six hits while striking out eight.

MLB – Tigers’ Gleyber Torres returns to Yankee Stadium for first time since World Series
Gleyber Torres returned to Yankee Stadium with a new look. Sporting cornrows and full beard, Torres returned to the Bronx for the first time since the World Series Tuesday after signing a $15 million, one-year contract with the Tigers in December. Torres batted .264 with 138 homers and 441 RBIs in 1,016 regular-season games for the Yankees. He is batting .259 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs in 128 games and also has a career-high .362 on-base percentage and has played 119 games at second. The Tigers beat the Yankees 12-2

NFL – Bears look for consistency from Caleb Williams and offense after loss to Vikings
Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson didn’t expect as much inconsistency from his offense or from quarterback Caleb Williams, but has it after Week 1. The Bears lost 27-24 at home to the Minnesota Vikings in their opener on Monday night and now go to Detroit for a much-anticipated game against the team Johnson worked for as offensive coordinator. Williams’ early success was followed by long stretches of struggles against the Vikings.

NFL – Eagles’ Jalen Carter loses $57,222 for spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott
Jalen Carter’s penalty for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sends a message to the rest of the league. Carter is losing $57,222 for the infraction, the equivalent of his game check for Week 1 because the NFL considers the punishment a one-game suspension with time served. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle didn’t play a snap after he was ejected from Philadelphia’s 24-20 victory over Dallas on Thursday. Carter is expected to be on the field when the Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch on Sunday. The team could impose its own discipline such as benching Carter for the first play, the first series or longer.

Fever 83, Lynx 72 – Fever close season with 83-72 win over league-leading Lynx as Collier sits out
Kelsey Mitchell scored 18 points and the Indiana Fever wrapped up the regular season with an 83-72 win Tuesday night over the league-leading Minnesota Lynx, who were resting MVP candidate Napheesa Collier. Indiana (24-20) scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 24, an impressive performance without star Caitlin Clark, who has only played 13 games this season and will not play in the playoffs that begin Sunday. Odyssey Sims scored 15 points for the Fever, who set a franchise record for most wins in a season. Aliyah Boston had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Aces 92, Sky 61 – Jewell Loyd reaches 6,000 points as Aces extend winning streak to 15 games
Jewell Loyd became the 16th player to reach 6,000 points, scoring 15 on Tuesday night to help extend the Aces’ winning streak to 15 games. The Aces secured a 92-61 victory over the Chicago Sky, putting Las Vegas in contention for the second seed of the WNBA playoffs. Las Vegas will clinch that seed and home-court advantage through at least the semifinals if they win at Los Angeles on Thursday or Atlanta loses at Connecticut on Wednesday. Jackie Young also scored 15 points, one of six Aces players in double figures. Cheyenne Parker-Tyus made her Las Vegas debut with eight points in eight minutes.

NBA – Bulls sign Josh Giddey to new contract after big debut season with Chicago
The Chicago Bulls have signed guard Josh Giddey to a new contract reportedly worth $100 million over four years. The team announced the deal on Tuesday but did not disclose financial terms. Chicago acquired Giddey from Oklahoma City in June 2024. He became one of three NBA players to achieve at least 1,002 points, 566 rebounds, and 503 assists, joining LeBron James and Nikola Jokic. Last season, he averaged 14.6 points and a career-high 8.1 rebounds per game. Giddey also led the Bulls with 7.2 assists, starting 69 of 70 games.

NCAAFB – Big Ten’s weak slate this week raises questions about scheduling strategies
The Big Ten’s lackluster schedule this week exemplifies a problem facing the conference. Not enough teams are testing themselves outside of league play. Six Big Ten schools are facing Championship Subdivision programs this week. One-third of the league’s 18 members aren’t playing any nonconference games against Power Four schools or Notre Dame this season. Michigan, Southern California, UCLA and Wisconsin are the only Big Ten teams that don’t have an FCS school on their schedule.

NHL – NHL CBA establishes $4M annual fund for retired players’ health care and wellness
The NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement establishes an emergency health care and wellness fund for alumni. It’s the first time the sport has had such a source for retired players. Officials from the league, union and alumni association shared details Tuesday about the plan that allocates $4 million annually to assist with physical and mental health concerns. Alumni Association president and executive director Glenn Healy said the plan provides access to a family doctor and a mental wellness professional for anyone who played even one game in the NHL.
