Tigers 11, Yankees 1 – Torres’ 3 RBIs lead Tigers over Yankees 11-1 for 1st season-series win vs NY since 2011
Gleyber Torres hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning and had three RBIs against his former team, leading the Detroit Tigers over New York 11-1 for their first season-series win against the Yankees since 2011. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith added late two-run homers against a Yankees bullpen that has given up 18 earned runs over two games, raising its ERA since the All-Star break to 5.37. Greene had three RBIs. New York has lost consecutive games by 10 or more runs for the third time after 1908 and 1988. Detroit has outscored New York 23-3 in consecutive games.
White Sox 6, Rays 5 – White Sox beat Rays 6-5 after five-run second inning
Mike Tauchman and Lenyn Sosa hit two-run doubles and Michael A. Taylor had an RBI double during a five-run second inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5. Andrew Benintendi hit a third-inning home run for Chicago. Yandy Díaz hit a solo home run for the Rays in the first inning. Carson Williams hit a solo home run in the fifth and Junior Caminero added a two-run home run later in the inning. Jordan Leasure (5-6), the fourth of eight White Sox pitchers, threw one inning. Tyler Gilbert struck out Brandon Lowe to secure his first career save.
Cubs 3, Braves 2 – Cubs get to Sale, outlast Braves 3-2 to win series
Carson Kelly homered for the first of three runs against reigning NL Triple Crown winner Chris Sale and the Chicago Cubs outlasted the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Wednesday to win the series. In the fourth inning, Kelly homered and Justin Turner had an RBI double. Chicago made it 3-1 in the fifth on Seiya Suzuki’s sacrifice fly Nico Hoerner went 3 for 4 and scored the final run for the Cubs. They have won six of 10 to hold onto the first National League wild-card spot. Cubs starter Jameson Taillon was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of the game. He allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

MLB – Yankees lose consecutive games by 10 runs for only the 3rd time
The New York Yankees have lost consecutive games by 10 or more runs for only the third time in their storied history. The Yankees’ bullpen allowed nine earned runs for the second day in a row, leading to an 11-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers following a 12-2 defeat in the series opener. Their bullpen has a 5.37 ERA since the All-Star break, raising it to 4.54 for the season — on track to be their highest since 1995. Still, the Yankees lead for the top AL wild card, one percentage point ahead of Boston.
MLB – Anthony Rizzo will retire as a Chicago Cub and become a team ambassador
Anthony Rizzo will retire as a member of the Chicago Cubs and become a team ambassador. The 36-year-old Rizzo spent most of his 14 major league seasons with the Cubs, hitting .272 with 242 home runs. He helped the team win the World Series in 2016. Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts praised Rizzo as a key figure in the team’s success. Rizzo was a three-time All-Star and won multiple awards. He also raised millions for cancer research through his foundation. Rizzo played his rookie season with San Diego and spent his final seasons with the New York Yankees.
MLB – Tigers have had at least 8 employees accused of misconduct toward woman
The Detroit Tigers have had at least eight employees accused of misconduct toward women over the last two years, according to a report by The Athletic. The report published Wednesday followed an investigation that started last April and included interviews with 45 current and former employees along with access to emails, human resources documents, text messages and court records. Female employees of Ilitch Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Tigers, Red Wings and other businesses, were subjected to misconduct by seven of the eight men named in the report.

NFL – Bears QB Caleb Williams checking his footwork and passing fundamentals
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is trying to stay positive amid the negativity after a 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings to start the season, and coach Ben Johnson calls his QB’s passing issues largely a case of simple fundamentals. Williams went 21 of 35 for 210 yards but had started 10 of 10 before fading away while the Bears saw a 17-6 lead wiped out. They’re headed to Detroit on Sunday to face the team Johnson served as an offensive coordinator for the last three years and they’re looking for a more efficient game from Williams and the offense.

NCAAFB – Notre Dame takes off reins on CJ Carr and will turn him loose against A&M
No. 6 Notre Dame played it safe with a new starting quarterback on the road in its season-opening loss at then-No. 10 Miami. It may have cost coach Marcus Freeman more than a victory. He also acknowledged losing some sleep. So with the Fighting Irish back on their own turf following a bye week, Freeman is expected to give CJ Carr a longer leash against No. 16 Texas A&M on Saturday. Carr had a solid first career start, going 19 of 30 with 221 yards, two touchdown passes, one TD run and one interception in the 27-24 loss at Miami. But Freeman now is ready to turn Carr loose.
NCAAFB – USC hopes that piling up big plays can help it address its Big Ten road woes
The USC Trojans have piled up explosive gains through two comfortable wins against overmatched opponents to start the season and will now look to keep the trend going when they open conference play at Purdue on Saturday. USC couldn’t find enough ways to make things easy in its first go-round as a member of the Big Ten, winning one of its five league road games. The offense generated six plays of 40 yards or longer and two touchdowns of over 25 yards in those contests, which stands in contrast to the seven touchdowns of at least 36 yards that USC had in its two-game homestand to start this season.
NCAA – US Senator warns colleagues of ‘distorted system’ if college sports bill passes
Sen. Maria Cantwell has warned that a bill regulating college sports could widen the gap between major athletic conferences and others. In a letter to the Senate Commerce Committee, she criticized the SCORE Act, which the House will vote on next week. The NCAA and top conferences support the bill, which offers limited antitrust exemption and a national statute for paying players. Cantwell argues it favors the Big Ten and SEC, calling them the “Big 2.” The bill has bipartisan support in the House but faces challenges in the Senate. Cantwell seeks a more equitable model for college athletics.
